Hi folks, I decided to open another thread to dedicate to this topic.

I recently made a purchase of two Leupold VX II scopes to mount on two Savage Rifles, one in .308, and on in 300 WM.

here is my thread that talks about that:

Now, the question is what bases and rings do I use? What ones CAN I use? After reading a bit, I gather that it's smartest to use the shortest ones I can for the scopes and rifles I have. That makes sense.

Are there any brands that are better than others? I can say that I have decided that without a doubt, I WILL lap the rings in, using a scope-mounting kit. I have the page that shows what part numbers for Leupold parts will work, but are there other suggestions that I should consider?

Thanks, and have a great day!

I use and recommend Burris Signature rings with the polymer inserts. No lapping needed and the inserts align the scope to the barrel. Great rings.

Yea, Burris Signature Zee rings are the best I've used under $100. I love the inserts. Great value and well worth the $30 they cost. I highly recommend them.

Burris and leupold make some great hunting base/rings combos. I have always used leupold style twist rings on hunting rifles until I went out on a limb and bought a Gamer Reaper Dead nutz mount, and have not looked back. For the price they are very well made and super lite. They would be worth a try if they make it for your particular gun and I am sure they do. Best prices I have found is on ebay.

Another vote for Burris Zee rings and inserts. They cured a scope slipping issue I had on my Contender.

Mr. Polar:

Bases & ring recommendation: Burris, leupold, or conetrol (dual-dovetail 2-piece models)

1. 100% all steel---no lightweight anything !!!!
2. No "see-thru" anything !!!!
3. Align bases & rings with a proper steel alignment bar---not the scope !!!!!!
4. Turn in the rings with the steel alignment bar, a 1" hardwood dowel, or a plastic ring wrench----do not use scope for this purpose !!!
5. Lap-fit rings for a precision fit, if not using the burris ring inserts. Bench-rest shooters have been doing this for decades !!!
6. Use a small bubble level to level the bases. Then use the level to align the horizontal cross hairs on the scope.

This information was brought to you at no cost, by a 60 year old gun-nut who has mounted at least 100 scopes in the past 30 years !!!

Just bought a pair of Leupold bases and standard rings for my Model 70, and quite frankly, I was a bit taken aback at the mediocre quality of the machining, which was about on par with a high school metal shop student. I'll use them, but not without considerable lapping.

If you'll permit a slight digression, I am curious about something: When a "professional" gunsmith---let us say a Gander Mountain gunsmith---does a "free mounting," to they lap the scope rings? Does anybody know?
