I finally think I have my ROA dialed in????

I was getting 2-2 1/2 inch groups shooting from a sand bag at 25 yards with the following load:

30 grains of Goex 3f BP
10 grains of cornmeal
Sagebrush lubed wad
Hornady .457 ball
CCI #11 mag cap
Bore snake down the barrel after each cylinder.

Changed to Speer .457 balls and CCI #11 regular caps and my groups went to 5 inches.

Would a different brand ball and cap make that much difference??

What kind of accuracy with what loads are you other ROA shooters getting?

Thanks!
Brent

I usually get ~2" groups shooting over the hood of my truck, rested on a old pack with:

35 grains of Goex fff
Speer .454" RB
Maxi-Lube
"11 Remington cap

no cleaning between cylinders

If I switch to my .45 LC converter I can shrink the groups to ~1.5" with:

5 grains of Trail Boss
250 gr lead flat nose
CCI 300 primer

Note: I had trigger job done and it lets off easy with no creep.

What, y'all aren't getting 1/2 inch groups at 50 yards???

I'm sure somebody'll be along shortly to tell ya what sorry shots you are. :p:rolleyes:

( Won't be me though. An inch and a half to two inches at 25 yards is damn good, in my book, no matter whether you're using ball and cap or cartridges. )

There is a foremost authority, ammunition guru, outstanding american handgunner, living legend claiming to get 1/2" bench groups at 500 yards with his rifle. He also reports hitting a license plate sized target from the hip at 25 yards with his .45 auto. Some people even believe him and ask worshipful advise from him. If he doesn't like the question, he urinates on them from his exhauted pedastal.

All that aside, the 2-2.5 " groups sound very good. this is a couple of 50 yard groups I shot over a chronograph checking out wad vs no wad

I did something similar with a 190/.457 buffalo bullet.

50 yd 1/2 inch groups-

Yeah, like Jamie C. said- I'm here to tell you that you should be getting 1/2 inch groups at 50 yds- Ha ha.. Jamie, I keep telling you, that I got those groupings with a custom handload out of a cartridge cylinder conversion on a ROA, do you even have one?? You Dont- So shut the F#$* up, then! :cuss:

Stop being such a freakin crab, it is possible, I did it. I'm sure there are others out there able to get those groups, my ROA shoots excellent, I got lucky with that gun, sheesh.. some are good and some are great guns, all you guys know that. :banghead:

Also, do I have to remind you that I'm in law enforcement, and a marksman? I train to fight for my life, I'm not a casual hobbyist like you who can shoot a darn, jamie. Give it up, and retire those old eyes of yours. :neener:

Scratch Shooting! You don't make the amazing shots (or groups) if you don't take them.

I took a crow out of the top of a tree at over 125 yds with a Marlin 44 Mag lever gun with open sights, rested off the rearview mirror of my 1994 Dodge 4X4 Pickup. Took his head right off. Good shooting? Maybe, but more than likely a lucky, or as Billy Dixon said about his shot at Adobe Walls shot, a SCRATCH shot. Could I ever do it again...highly unlikely, but you don't make them if you don't take tem. BTW there was a high hill backstop. I don't take any shot that might endanger others or oters property.

Freakin' Amazing! A cop that can shoot! You are in the minority fer sure.

MEC,
Well said!

I'm an ex-soldier and an ex-cop that can shoot. I never qualified any lower than 98%.

Also, most of the local L.E.O.s are shooters here. I can't think of more than 2 or 3 out of about 125-150 that aren't either avid shooters or hunters.

But I guess that just comes with living out in the boonies.

Oh, and by the way, SOF.... Here's my badge:

Where's yours?

Jamie C, SOF,
Most of the Leo's I know that shoot all the time are good shots too. It's the ones that only shoot to qualify that I wonder about. My Nephew is a Sargent in a little town in N.C. Most of those guys on the force can shoot too. I've had more than one Leo or ex-leo tell me they couldn't shoot for crap because they didn't shoot all the time.
I remember a shoot out in LA 110 shots exchanged and no one hit what they were shooting at. That is appaulling.

You guys left yourselve's wide open and I just had to bust your chops a bit.

I Tell my Nephew. "Your are my hero, because I could never do you job."
"On any given day, I'd be judge, jury, and exocutioner."

I extend the same to you guys and all LEO's. Thanks for being there and putting your lives on the line for us everyday.

ArmedBear,
No it wasn't in the Republic of California.
It was legal where I lived at the time.
It wasn't in this century either. Golly that's fun to say...LOL
Come to think of it I've lived all this century except for the first 7 weeks here in the Republic of California. Boy that's scary.

That may change soon, My landlord sold the property I live on and I have to move by August. I'm trying to decide whether to stay here or move back to N.C. to where, what's left of my family are.

Y'know, I know an image that's been scooped up off the internet when I see one....

Like this:

So I'm still thinkin' songsofreedom is as full of s*** as a Christmas goose.
And if you'll go to This site, and look at the badge at the bottom left of the page, you'll see why I say that. ( It's the exact image songsofreedom posted here. )

I'm full of S#$% because Jamie C knows everything...

Oh, and my christmas goose is very full of S#$% too, Just to let everyone know. You happy now? HA HA.. And guys, whatever Jamie C tells it, he's always right because he knows everything, not even a respectably positioned LEO... Last time I heard about your department was, wait- I never heard S#$% about your department! Oops!

You guys want to remember where you are, please? If you've got a beef with each other take it off the board - use pms or email.

Changed to Speer .457 balls and CCI #11 regular caps and my groups went to 5 inches.
Any input on why this happened??

Well, frankly no.

I really doubt that the caps had much to do with it - magnum to regular doesn't seem to me to affect accuracy.

I can imagine the Speer vs Hornady being an issue, as I think they are made differently. But a doubling of the group size seems pretty large for that. Speer can't be that much worse than Hornady, otherwise they'd never sell any.

Ok, thanks!

I will head back to the range and do some more shooting.....guess I can always adjust the charge if I am still getting the same groups.

Hopefully it was just my poor shooting!:)

20-25 grains of 3fG with cornmeal fill under a .457 soft lead ball always worked well for me and in my competing days brought home the prizes. Same load that Ruger recommends in the manual for target shooting.
