Can a .457 ball as used in a Ruger Old Army be used in any other brand of black powder pistol. I cast my own, and would like to buy another type of revolver and would like to stay with the same ball size.

If not, I'll get another size mold :D

I shoot .457 balls in my ROA, Euroarms 1858 Remington, and Pietta 1858 Remington. I shot them in an Uberti 2nd Model Dragoon which I used to have. My father uses .457s in his Uberti 1860 Colt.

If you load off

a loading stand and not the revolvers loading lever , you can use .457 on anything . It will shave off whatever lead it wants , resulting in an even more longer slender sided RBTSWC bullet anyways . Which is a good thing :D
I wouldn't personally press a .457 into some of mine with the standard laoding lever on the gun however .

Das Jaeger :)

.457s work fine in my ROA, of course, and I suspect that my Walker will like them, as well.

.451s go well in my early Pietta '59 Remington and .454s in the '51 Colt.

Yeah, I cast my own. My lead is often a little harder than I would like, so shaving off large rings is not a good idea.

The only ball mold I have is a .457. I use real lead.....easy to load. I have 9 BP revolvers. Colts and Remingtons and i have two cylinders for some of them. I load them at home before I go to range. I use a loading stand for all but the Ruger. I take my Wive with me, she only shoots BP rifle. When we are done and I shot revs'. She keeps the loading stand going.
Das Jaeger is right about the loading stand. I learned the hard way. Had to buy one new leaver.

I'm using swagged .457's in my ROA and swagged .454's in my Uberti 1858 but I suspect the .457 will work just fine in the 1858 and I'll probably try it next time around.

On the subject of loading stands which one would the hive collectively recommend?
I too only want to keep one 44 ball size in the box to avoid. le errors less to forget too

This member of the Borg collective recommends and uses 6Gun4Fun's Pistol Packin' Pardner - The Triple-P Black Powder Cylinder Loader.

Now with new and improved arbor sets! And spoilers! (Well ok, not really with spoilers, but it should have them).

Compatible with the following BP cylinders:

  • Colts Pocket .31 cal.
  • Colts Baby Dragoon .31 cal.
  • Colts Wells Fargo .31 cal.
  • Colts Walkers .44 cal.
  • Colts Dragoons .44 cal.
  • Colts Army .44 cal.
  • Colts Navy .36 cal.
  • Colts 1873 BP SAA .44 cal.
  • Colts 1855 Side Hammer Revolving Carbine
  • Colts 1851 Rebel .44 cal.
  • Lemat .44 cal.
  • Remington NMA .44 cal.
  • Remington Pocket .36 cal.
  • Rogers & Spencer .44 cal.
  • Ruger Old Army .45 cal.
  • Starr SAA .44 cal.

The Triple P is a cylinder loader, not a gun loading stand. It is an excellent accessory for anyone shooting any and all cap and ball revolvers as well as making lubed felt wads for use in those revolvers. Highly recommended for anyone who wishes to remove the cylinder from the gun to load it, or to make felt wads.

However, it is not a gun loading stand. If you want a stand for supporting either a capa and ball revolver or a single shot black powder muzzleloading pistol during loading, the only one I'm aware of available on the current market is sold by Traditions:

I use .457 ball in my ROA and Colt 1860s by Uberti and Pietta with no problem. I do use only pure lead when casting. The Colts will do okay with .454s but I've been able to standardize on .457 which is convenient.

Safety Concern

Don't mean to hijack the thread, but regarding the picture with the red revolver stand.

It appears that there is an open container of black powder in the case and the lid has items in it.

An open container of powder at my range is considered an un-safe condition and will get you in big trouble.

Johnsmall, the guy that runs this range is a pretty good fella. :) You can get away with a lot there as long as you follow his three rules:

1. Safety first
2. Have fun
3. Go home at dark

I suspect Clembert's got an "in" with the range master at that range... 'spose Clembert?

Ratdog, do ya suppose a firearm pointing up would get the bed wetters a bit bent out of shape too? :D

Clembert... they have a hissy fit when college kids aim their laser pointers at planes... and dedicate manpower to seize/jail 'em 'round here. I can only imagine what they'd do if there was a barrel pointed at 'em.

Ratdog, do ya suppose pointing a firearm at overhead flying airplanes would get the FAA a bit bent out of shape too?

Just talking about it well get you a visit from the FBI. My first career has as an air traffic controller and part of the duties was to deal with noise complaints from the general public. Had a guy call and threaten to shoot down a military helicopter. I passed that along to the military powers and the next day we had FBI agents come up and question us about the call. Of course the caller gave us his name and address as part of the complaint form we filled out. FBI paid him a visit, not a friendly one.

Oh, yeah, madcratebuilder. I felt pretty nervous on the line during the last election when I looked up and realized that the plane doing a low bank over our firing range held our potential Commander-in Chief.

I could just feel the M I Bs staring over my shoulder.

Didn't do my shooting any good at all.

Yup, I wouldn't doubt it if the bed wetting liberals make us redesign our revolver stands so the revolver points down instead of up. :banghead:

p.s. I modified the post above just in case some bed wetters didn't realize the reference was to the picture of a BP revolver pointing up as it sits in a revolver stand....sheesh....

articap, Thanks for the web site. That does all the revolvers and cut wads. It is $99 and to me it is well worth the price. I have one from the Possible Shop. It does not work on my ROA and none of my 36's
Tanks again, will oder one to day............
