Help me make a decision on my next purchase...I currently have neither though I have 8 Remington's (Pedersoli, Pietta Shooters, Lewis custom, Uberti, & standard Piettas), 4 Colts (2 2nd generation 1851's, Uberti Walker, Uberti police), several single shots (flint & percussion), and too many long arms to mention  . My local shop has a ROA with adjustable sights and a stainless 4 1/2 inch Vaquero (that would only be fired with BP :D ). Each can be had for about $400. What's next????

Thoughts and opinions appreciated.

ROA will be more versatile! You can set it up to shoot .45 Colt, .45 ACP and naturally, c.&b.
You may find a .45 ACP cyl. for the Vaquero but you wont shoot c.&b. with it !!

If you want to shoot cartridges then just go for the Vaquero.

but the ROA is likely to get harder and harder to get your hands on if you plan to get one eventually.

Depending on condition, it seems the ROA is a better value. I just paid $700 for a new in box ROA and you see them on the web for $1,000. For $250 you can get a conversion cylinder for 45 colt. I love mine. I think you can find more Vaqueros around but that price is not bad either, again depending on condition. Just think about the money your saving buying them both. My wife is giving me the evil eye. Somehow she, knows what I just wrote.

If the ROA is in good shape, go for it. You don't see that low a price too often these days. Much as I like a Vaquero, it's still available. The ROAs can only get scarcer. Every C&B fan should have one. Much as I enjoy the Colt and Remmy repros, the ROA is my favorite.

Old Army. Jump on it! You can always get a Vaquero. Want a cartridge capable revolver, buy a conversion cylinder.

Thanks guys. I do have a conversion cylinder for the Remington if I want to shoot cartridge and I think it's a good point the vaqueros are still available. I am going to stop by tomorrow and see if it's still there.

I think my wife heard you write that.... The last time I "over did it" and spent a little more then she felt reasonable, I said I wouldn't by anymore guns for 3 months. Then I went and bought a 12lb Confederate mortar and said it wasn't a "gun".....its crew served Artillery :D

You have potential to be a lawyer, or a politician.

What's the question? Buy one of them and put the other on hold with a few dollars. Never can have too many!

handguns are so personal - YOUR MILEAGE MAY VARY - but I was going to buy a Vaquero in .45 Colt when I started researching the 1858 and reading about chronograph results, watching videos and seeing pretty accurate fire.... to my mind for what I do ( Blue Ridge/Appalachia and mid atlantic lowlands ) the .44 BP is simply more versatile than the .45 Colt.

Now mind you, I've spent some time in those hills with a 1911, a Super Blackhawk, Model 29, and never felt bad about any of those choices, certainly wouldn't mind having another Ruger SA.... but given the choice I'd have to go for the Old Army. If it has a long snout and you ever want to trade it for an N frame we will have to contact some local FFl dealers to make that trade without being a guest a club fed.....

There are PLENTY of them. People are just willing to pay more and more for them.

I guess I'm in the Vaq first, ROA never camp. Once I thought I had a craving for a ROA, but that didn't last long. If I'm gonna spend that kind of money it will be for a Pedersoli new army target model or a Pietta shooters model. If I feel like shooting 45 Colt, well, the Vaq is for that.

Well I went to see thr ROA today and was a little disappointed. It wasn't blued as I had thought but had been parkerized. Does the parkerization reduce the value? How difficult to remove it and reblue?

I would keep my $400 in my pocket until I found a gun that made my heart race.

My thinking is, if you can't make up your mind between the two, then you don't want either one of them bad enough.

Nothing came up for "ROA" but Armslist has a bunch of "Ruger Old Army"'s priced from $140 to $700. I imagine the auction sites have a similar spread of prices.
