I've had a full size, standard Rock Island Armory 1911 for a couple of years. Thought I'd get a compact model. Picked one up at a gunshow a week ago. There's a standard owner's manual with the pistol, plus a supplement that says this is a "CS" model. I assume that that's a Compact (Commander) model. And, it also states that it uses a "6" rd magazine. But, it also says that a 7 and 8 rd mag will fit. So...it came with a 7 rd mag, the seller gave me a "compact" size generic mag that holds 6 rds, (which by the way doesn't stay locked up if you release the slide catch when changing mags). Anyway, what the heck kind of mags does this thing take?? Hopefully I'll try the gun this week, but I'm wondering, when I look for some more mags, what do I look for?? 6, 7, or 8 rd???? It came w/7 rd mag, so should I stick with that? Seems like a lot of variables just for one style of pistol??.. Thanks. Greg

It likely takes "officer" size magazines, which can be had in 6-round (original design) or 7-round (newer design)

There are only two 1911 magazine sizes*, government/commander and officer, capacity can vary because we're talking about a 100-year old design, and followers/baseplates have changed in the last century.

*(not counting staggered "doublestack" or non-.45acp types, that is)

I haven't had a chance yet to try it out, maybe today if it quits raining long enough. Sounds like the supplied "ACT" mag works well for most everyone, so I'll probably look for more of these. I couldn't get the dealer down too much on the price (some but I tried for more LOL), but he did throw in the extra mag (used) for it. However, I've found that when you release the slide when it's locked back, the mag unlocks also. So, it doesn't look like this mag is going to work. Local gun show is coming up in a couple of weeks, so I'll look around for a couple of replacements. Thanks. Greg

I tried a variety of magazines, and ended up stocking up on Wilson Combat mags in the end.

They're worth it, and if your gun shows are like the ones around here, officer mags will be rare and low quality

I have Wilson, MecGar and Checkmates for my RIA Full Size, all 7 rounders. The ACT that came with it was retired when it puked it's guts & 7 rounds of ammo out onto the line.:fire:

These are a pretty good bang for the buck. They run great in my FS even with HP & SWC ammo. I'm glad I have an Uplula mag loader tho. The "high performance" spring is rather robust.
