Romanian PSL

Have two. Love them. Just fun to shoot. Shot mine today, in fact. You can do better on pricing. Check Classic Arms and Atlantic. Both sell Romanian factory made guns. Classic is selling the PSL54c just like the one you linked. Any of the Romanian factory guns are the same..or should be. It's usually recommended to stay away from guns made in the US on parts kits.

why would your FFL have to modify it? if it wasn't CA legal AIM would have a note right above the "buy now" button

now your FFL would have to order it and charge you a transfer fee which from what i heard CA FFLs charge ridiculous tranfer fees

Because by definition of california law it is an assault weapon. However it does not classify as an assault weapon if it has a fixed 10 round magazine or lacks another certain feature. I will just have to check and see if he can order it and then modify it for me and then sell it to me as a standard rifle.

The PSL has it's points, but it definitely has drawbacks as well. The only major drawback that's inherent to the (US import) gun, I find, is that the barrel is a little thin and whippy, and heats up quickly. In fast strings of fire, you can see noticeable vertical stringing.
I'm not sure if CA restrictions make it a better or worse buy than a scoped "sniper" Nagant rifle. Leaving aside the fact that none of the 7.62x54R surplus out there is exactly match grade, you're not going to be happy running bullets much over the 147 grain through the PSL. On the other hand, if you've got some ridiculous magazine lock anyway, you won't be thinking so much about the annoying prospect of paying $40 plus shipping for extra magazines that cost that much because hey, that's what people can get away with charging.

It is noteworthy to recognize that the PSL barrel is no thinner then the M1A barrel...

Also, in my experience, accuracy between the two beasts is about the same, given surplus ammunition.

It may of been my bad luck, but my first PSL had a pitted chamber which was causing problems. I sent it back for another, but my second PSL fired 2 shots every time i pulled the trigger. So i sent it back for my third, which works well. Despite the cost, it is cheaply put together. The top metal cover doesn't fit very tightly and stock isn't fitted very well.

Despite that, i am able to shoot milk jugs at 400 yards (it takes me 2 to 3 shots). Recoil is minimal and it's just fun to shoot!

I had one that blew up. Consequently I cannot recommend this rifle unless it has the uber illegal safety sear in it.

I had one but due to lack of cheap non corrosive ammo decided to sell. It was fun and unique.

But I sold it and picked up an M1 Garand and IMO a much better rifle

Well, maybe it's not a thin barrel, but mine sure strings shots vertically as it warms up.

Mine strung shots with warm bbl too. Plus you should only shoot the light ball ammo...heavy ball can damage the rifle (gas system is set up for 147gr ball). Still a fine rifle. But I would get a DPMS 308 or something else like a Saiga 308 before I'd get another PSL.

If I remember correctly the PSL isn't so much a true SVD action so much as an AK action that is big and strong enough to withstand 7.62x54r.
