INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney is taking a second shot at describing his hunting experience.
The former Massachusetts governor has called himself a lifelong hunter, yet his campaign acknowledged that he has been on just two hunting trips—one when he was 15 and the other just last year.

Campaigning in Indianapolis on Thursday, Romney said he has hunted small game since his youth.

"I'm not a big-game hunter. I've made that very clear," he said. "I've always been a rodent and rabbit hunter. Small varmints, if you will. I began when I was 15 or so and I have hunted those kinds of varmints since then. More than two times."

In Keene, N.H., on Tuesday, Romney had said: "I purchased a gun when I was a young man. I've been a hunter pretty much all my life." The next day, the campaign said Romney hunted rabbits in Idaho with cousins as a teenager and shot quail with GOP donors at a game preserve in Georgia in 2006.

Campaign spokesman Eric Fehrnstrom said Wednesday that Romney wasn't trying to mislead anyone, and he promoted Romney's support of gun- ownership rights.

Romney has also supported gun control. When he ran unsuccessfully for the Senate in 1994 he backed the Brady law and a ban on assault-style rifles. As governor, he supported the state's strict gun-control laws and signed into law one of the nation's tougher assault weapons laws.

He joined the National Rifle Association last August as a "Lifetime" member.

What a wishy-washy poser. He supported the AWB in 94, and became an NRA life member last year. Does he really believe in anything?

Typical NE leftist puke. Pulling a page out of the John Kerry playbook. I wonder if he's gonna strike a pose with a sacrificial goose too and crawl on his belly on a deer hunt?:scrutiny: :barf:

He is just another Clinton clone in Republican clothing.
He has the same rock-solid, deep-seeded, core-of-his-being belief of whatever audience he happens to be speaking to at the moment.

ugh... I heard an interview with him the other day... there wasn't a single answer he gave that wasn't the classic slimy weasel politician answer.

I don't trust him a bit. Which is sad, 'cause of the three front runners as I recall he looked one of the less objectionable on paper. Then again, that's prolly because he's a weasel. :)

I have already posted this, but I will post it again:

No grown man can change his political positions that quickly. One day Mitt Supported Gun Control, the next day he was a member of the NRA. How convenient that he makes this change around the same time that he announces his candidacy for President. And still some people actually think that the GOP is all that better than the DNC.

Mitt Romney is no friend of The Second Amendment.

Last fall when I was in Mass., several of the locals told me that they hoped Mitt would run for the Presidency because it would get him out of the State.:D

I heard Mitt say that he supported the AWB as GWB said he would sign it if it got to his desk.

That should convince all the GWB apologists, who thought that strategy was brillant, that GWB was a typical full of crap GOP gun wuss. Remember GWB did the hunting trip and shot down an endangered birdie and never went out again. He left Cheney to go hunting and then OOPS!

Seriously, it points out how GWB could have been proactive and nailed the AWB as unacceptable to the GOP but he was too busy kissing up the soccer mom.

Eloi, go back to Massachusetts and wring your hands and cower. We do not need you here in Indiana.

He bought a gun when he was a young man? Did anyone ask him what year? Where he bought it? What model of firearm? What caliber?

Would be fun to know all the details.

Romney: Uhh. . . you know the good kind of gun. Not an "Assault Weapon" or a handgun, just a good old fashioned kind of gun, you know? I am a hunter you know, I support The Second Amendment.

Actually Romney is not a native of Mass, he was born and raised in Detroit Michigan. He only moved here to run for Senate in 1994. Need I say more. He is a complete poltico.

I do not like the guy and will NOT vote for him at this point. But really this is being overblown by the MEDIA. Chrissy Matthews was spitting about it. It could not believe that shooting varmits was hunting. I have NEWS for the non hunting MSM---------varmit hunting and rabbit and small game hunting is legetimate. Some people love varmit hunting more than anyother kind. The MSM does not realize the varmit hunting exists. IT DOES. I LIKE IT. I like small game hunting ie. rabbits, squirrels also. That is the part of the story that is wrong. He is probably not telling the truth but the MSM acts like varmit hunting is a JOKE.

Just a re-do of the John Kerry hunting trip, extensively covered by media to fool the ignorant yahoos. When I see posturing, it makes me wonder what needs to be covered up by the posturing. With Romney, it is pretty clear that he is not a friend of gunners, but wants their vote. If the R's nominate Romney, they fully deserve to be persecuted under Hillary. Same goes for Rudy and the Manchurian candidate, McCain.

Rabbit and squirrel hunting are as old as America. People fed themselves off small game for much of our history.

I've shot exactly one rabbit. Cooked it up. Should have aged the meat. Tasted good, but only my dog could chew through it.:D She LOVED it, and wants more next season.

Rabbit hunting is, in fact, more "real" than a lot of "big game" hunting that goes on. You don't do it for bragging rights.:)

That said, I think Romney has about as much traction outside the Northeast as a set of racing slicks on an ice rink. If he wins the nomination, by some bizarre fluke, we will have a Democrat President in '09.

Let's face it, there is NO Second Amendment supporter in the front running on either side. None of the Commies have a clue what the Second is all about, nor do they care. I will vote for Hillary before Mitt, McCain, Cross dresser from NY. That way we will have a chance that Congress will fight her on an AWB. If the Commie GOP guys get in, and the congress turns GOP as well, it is over. A split government is our only hope at this time. I doubt any real Second supporter has a chance, Ron Paul would be great, and if on the ballot, will get my vote, Fred Thomson looks to be a good choice, but ain't runnin yet.

Shame we let commies run for Prez, instead of deporting them:cuss:

I started shooting a long time before I was 16, and I may have shot a "small rodent" or three since then, but in no way does that make me a "hunter." More like a part-time exterminator, IMHO. (And that only when I didn't miss.)

It's V-A-R-M-I-N-T, dammit!
