I recently saw a rifle I've never come across, a Rossi Rio Grande. It was next to a Marlin 336, and it was slimmer looking, and priced slightly higher.

Have you fired one? How do they compare to other offerings by Marlin or Winchester?

I know that Rossi is now owned by Taurus, and that the quality of their firearms has gone up since being bought out, but I also know that Taurus is a divisive company. Some people love them for their affordable, quality, middle of the road firearms. Other people hate them for their cheap, easily breakable, middle of the road firearms.

They are basically a carbon copy of the Marlin 336. The actions are pretty smooth, and accuracy slightly above average. The wood is nowhere near as nice as you will find on an American rifle though. I wouldn't pay more for a Rossi than the Marlin. There are millions of older Marlins and Winchesters floating around for less money.

I think this response overestimates the quality control of Rossi products. Unless you cycle rounds through before you pay the money, you're rolling the dice with their product... Unless you don't mind the possibility of a project.

That said, I agree with 303's final thought...Far too many older gen Marlin and Winchester's out there to even take the chance on a Rossi.

my rio grande 45/70 has a factory defect of the forearm screw being drilled into the barrel and thinning the barrel to like, 0.020 !! Still trying to figure out what to do! (besides building a high-wall :)

Roll the dice if you feel lucky. Of course, the same can be said for the Remlins. There was a 336 Trapper in 30/30 on sale here for $295 as I recall. Provided it's a pre 2009 or 2013 model (Remington finally seems to have worked out how to build a lever gun), that's a great deal. There are thousands of late Seventies early Eighties New Haven made M94s that can be had for less than a Rossi.

Edit: sorry, the 336 Trapper was offered on Greybeard not here. It sold.
