Hi guys I recently bough a Ruger 1 in 45-70, it was for a good price. But for a reason, the barrel has been cut as short as legally allowed, the rifle is now a carbine and would be okay for something like a 30-30 but is no fun in a 45-70!

I have had a desire for the grandfather of magnums for a while, and a Ruger 1 would be a fine rifle for it. I am thinking a 22 or 24" barrel, heavy but not real heavy. I figure whilst it is capable on delivering a massive amount of energy, that in theory it should be quite a versatile round.

I assume 1:12 is the go for the twist. I am thinking of using 360 grains cast bullets and trailboss for fun or medium size game hunting and then letting her rip if I want to hunt something bigger!

I figure a near full case of Trailboss would get me 1200-1300 fps and that with all the case the 375 has that can easily hit 2100fps with more coal in the fire or even 2600fps with a 270 grain (jacketed of cause).

Anyway this is all guess work on my part, I guess what I am really asking is does anyone have experience of shooting heavies between 1000-2000 fps in the H&H and how accurate a cartridge is in when doing so at 100-300 yards?

I was considering a 38-55, I have one in a Winnie 94 and like it, but I figure I can load a 375 down but not a 38-55 up! However, before I put dollars in it I want to check if I should be able to get the same cast bullet accuracy from it as the 38-55.

Thanks

I'm only answering this because I have a .375 H&H and it's a great cartridge, and not because I have any insight into your specific situation. 1:12 is a common twist rate for the .375 but I have no idea about shooting 360gr bullets between 1,000 and 2,000 fps. I suggest you run some numbers using Berger's bullet stability calculator to get a bet idea of whether the bullets will be stable.

I think it would stabilize that boolit at that velocity just fine. I think 1-10" might be optimum for jacketed bullets over 300 grains as 1-12" is optimum for jacketed 300 grain .375 bullets at 2000+ Fps . Cast bullets at low velocities actually are shorter for their weight and a considerably slower twist is necessary at sub or trans sonic range , at least in muzzle loaders it is. I can shoot 350 spitzers out of my long range magnum Mauser Actioned Whitworth ,375 Weatherby which has 1-12" twist 27" heavy stainless Lothar Walther barrel very accurately , at least at the 200 yards I checked it at . I have the barrel threaded and CURRENTLY run a brake on the 11.5 pound beast. This is not a hunting rifle , although the 4x French Walnut english heavy game style stock blank I used and had fitted by the maker of it is NOT finished yet as he wanted way out of my ball game $ to finish and checker it. He was horrified when I suggested Anschutz typ stippling (Like I will do when I get around to it ) and a tung oil rub :}

I can’t offer any insight, but if you decide you want a Number 1 in 375 H&H, I had a guy offer me one for $1000 yesterday. I want a Number 1, but 375 H&H is a bit stout for my applications. I’d be glad to put you in contact with him.

Good morning
We have one. Heaviest cast slug we have used is a 340 GC slug at 1900 fps. It would be a great "stopper" slug for about 50 yards. At 100 out of our Ruger #1 it is not stable. I recon we could push it to 2200 fps but we have no large bears in East ILLinois. Not many black bears are ever seen and the cougars the wild life people deny exist do not need that much thwapping.
For longer range shooting (targets or critters) we load a 270 grain GC flat nose at 2200 fps cast from 50-50 wheel weight and range scrap. That is one violent thwapping slug at 100 yards. WW with Tin added expands a bit less for our all around shoot anything anywhere out to 200 yards.
We have a Micro Dot on that rifle. Very fast on target and always on the mark at 200 and under. But in all reality I have never fired on a critter past 75 yards with this 375 HH as it spends most the time down in some river bottom when we are up north there.
