I have some family coming over soon and thinking about getting a .22 rifle... are Ruger 10/22s any good? accurate? thanks

They are very popular, very affordable, and reliable. There's a ton of aftermarket accessories as well, if you wanna go that route.

Really can't go wrong.

It is the most popular and accessorizable .22. There are those who like the Marlins etc better, but you have the most options with this one.

If it is strict accuracy you are looking for, you can either tweak a 10/22, or look at some of the bolt-action rifles. HOW accurate do you want it to be?

also, do they jam? i have a tec 22 that jams every few rounds... which I'm going to sell to raise cash for new .22...

I'm having family come down... cousins who from 8-14 years old who have never shot a gun and I'm wanting to get a decent .22 for them to shoot before showing them an AK to shoot if they are able to show they can handle the .22 first...

Not very accuarte stock marlin wins by far. Marlins will outshoot Akita bolt actions. Both are great ruger wins reliability though

What's the opinion of the Marlin 60 vs 795? Would the tubular mag of the 60 limit your ammo choice to flat bullets?

Any 22lr will work in a Model 60. The primer is in the rim (i.e. rimfire) not in the middle (ie.centerfire). Some people prefer tube fed some prefer detachable magazines, neither is better than the other. The 795 is real cheap right now and is a good bargain.

I think the 10/22 is a better gun overall than either a 60 or 795, though I own all of them.

In reference to the OPs question about the drum mag. Never seen one that works. Stick to the Ruger BX25 or Butler Creek steel lip high cap mags.

The Marlin is a bit more accurate, the Ruger wins on long term durability and reliability. If you want to spend the money a Ruger can be highly customized right at home and turned into almost anything you want. Sure it is more money than buying something out of the box, but what fun is that. With a $200 aftermarket target barrel the 10-22 can be as accurate as anything else. As they leave the factory expect 2" or so groups at 50 yards.

I've heard of rough families, but jeez, you have to repel them with a gun?

Every shooter should have a 10/22 or something similar for good, cheap fun. I personally don't care much for the factory sights, but a set of Tech-sights (http://www.tech-sights.com/ruger.html) or a cheap red dot are good options.

I'm not repelling family :) but having family from communist states Connecticut and NY coming down with members who have never shot a gun before that I need to take to a shooting range... showing them southern hospitality at the shooting range... the kids all like guns but only have shot air soft...

10/22's are my favorite gun of all time. The people who say they aren't accurate must have gotten a bad one and that biased their opinion of them. i can shoot vines the size of my pinky finger out of trees all day long with mine. I've taken deer (yes it's legal here) with it, and countless squirrels.

Cheap magazines will mess you up every time, I had one that would chamber a round, then spit out 10 rounds at once... Go with good quality mags, and the stock magazine is the only one I would trust when hunting.

There may be better .22 semi-autos out there, but unless I get one for free I'll never know because mine isn't going anywhere. The fact that you can easily turn it into anything you want to is a big plus as well...

Not sure about texas, but here our wal-mart is selling the regular ones for $217.00 that's a pretty darn good deal!

our wally worlds are still communist here... only ammo and air soft, pellet and bb guns... Houston wally worlds suck! that's a sweet price for a new .22!

You might want to try a new magazine in your tec-22. Ours has been very reliable with any magazine that has been reliable in the 10-22s and a jam o matic with mags that jam in the 10-22.
The factory 10 rounders tend to be reliable. Butler Creek hot lips are usually reliable and the steel lips from BC and Tactical Innovations tend to be very reliable.
That said the 10-22 is a very fun little gun and a blast to customize if you want to make it a tackdriver.

As far as semi-auto .22 rifles goes, there are more accurate ones on the market. I'd give the Rem 552 a look. Sure, it's expensive, but a little smart shopping can score a really nice one for about half the cost of new.
