I was browsing Ruger's website and noticed that their American Pistol is still on their product listing. This particular gun seems to have dropped completely off the radar (although to be fair, I'm not sure that it was ever really on the radar). Feedback on the various forums seems to be generally positive. It's had one safety bulletin thus far. Anyone here have any positive/negative experiences with this gun?

IIRC they developed it to compete for the military contract to replace the M9 Beretta, but withdrew at an early stage because the DoD reserved the right to buy the design from one vendor, then give it to another for the actual production and Ruger wasn't havin' that.

At some point, it's conceivable that we will see Ruger or Beretta building SIG P320s.....but that would likely mean we are in a full-scale war anyway.

When the American pistol hadn't been out but a year or so I got one for my wife. She has an aversion to recoil. I thought a full sized 9mm would help with that. In honesty it hasn't been shot a lot (she doesn't shoot a lot & it is hers not mine). From everything I have seen & experienced it is a good solid pistol. I was somewhat interested in the compact version when they were going cheap pre-covid.

A friend who worked at Ruger brought one by while I was on the mend from open heart surgery. I liked the rather easy slide racking and the trigger pull, and I bought a Compact model wihour a manual safety.

I liked it, but when the EZ9 came out I strapped one on. More comfortable for all day carry, and I like the grip safety. But the Fuger is one fine pistol.

I owned the full-sized 45acp variant. The goods: I had no issues with different ammos, came with an extra backstrap, and as a lefty, the gun’s completely ambi, able to slide lock/return to battery easily. The bad part: The bore seemed a bit high, making it a bit more ‘flippy’ than the M&P45. Which is what I replaced it with.
