I was looking at a newer model ruger american ranch 5.56 that uses ar type mags , I believe it has a 16 in barrel
anyone have one or have shot one if so whats your opinion on them ?

My brother has the older style Ranch rifle that uses the rotary magazines and I have an 18" Compact. Both are very good shooters and being able to use AR magazines would be even better. I will either replace the stock on mine to be able to accept AR magazines, or purchase another. I think you'll like it.

Is the 16 in barrel a disadvantage compared to your 18in or say the predator 22in barrel ?

I don't think it is a huge deal. I have AR's with both 16" and 18" barrels plus the 18" Ruger American. To my eye the 18" barrel looks a little better, but I don't think there is enough difference in velocity to worry about. My brother added a flash hider to his 16" barrel and I think it looks a little better. With the shorter threaded barrel they have suppressor use in mind.

Going to the 22" Predator barrel might make enough difference to matter if you really need the extra speed for longer shots. But I was more interested in a compact rifle than squeezing all the possible velocity out of it.

I haven't shot one buy my old Army buddy has, and if he says it is his favorite rifle that means something as he has dozens of rifles of all types. He also has a .223 version which he gave to one of his kids.

These are his comments to me: No, mine uses a regular rotary mag. I ordered the 308 with the rotary mag too. Ruger has three different versions of that rifle. I think they rushed it to market before they figured out which magazine type they wanted to use. They have versions that use the rotary magazine, AR magazine, and an AI style magazine. I think there are disassembly and trigger adjustment issues with both the AI & AR mags. I saw no benefit to having those type of magazines. I like the detachable flush-fit rotary magazine just fine and don’t think for my application I would ever get more than one shot anyway.

Right now it is my favorite rifle. It is scary accurate, lightweight, compact and has negligible recoil.
