I believe the rear sights on the RAR and 10/22 are the same? It's weird but I've never actually shot a 10/22 so I never had the pleasure of discovering how much I disliked the rear sights.

Picked up my new RAR with threaded barrel and went out to sight it in today. It will be the host for an AAC Element 2 can and also be for teaching new shooters and my little ones fundamentals once they get older.

Because I plan to use it to teach my kids, I'd like to keep iron sights on it, then worry about finding an optic later down the road. I absolutely dislike the factory rear sight. I ran out of elevation adjustment; had it as high as it would go and it was still approximately 3" low at 50 yards.

Using a punch to drift the rear sight proved to be frustrating so I gave up on it. I'm extremely happy with Williams Firesights on my 22/45 and am considering those but was wondering what else is out there?

I do prefer peep sights on rifles and there are some good ones out there, but am wondering if open sights would be better to start off with?

Thoughts or comments? Thanks.

If anybody wants this rear sight PM me, otherwise it's going in the trash.

I'm probably going to install Tech Sights on this one and use a cut-off rail for the red dot. I have an Element 2 coming as well.

I sent you a PM even though its not showing on my sent folder. But I will take the sight and pay the postage.

Check out Tech-Sights for your gun. I am going to get one for my mini-14.

I zeroed my Ruger American at fifty yards with the open sights and then mountexd a scope. I had no problem with the sights and did not even adjust them. The scope took about ten clicks down and she was zero on the targets. I then put my buddies suppressor on the barrel and found it did not change the point of impact. The ammo was CCI white cardboard box ( not mini mags) from the nineties. Neat .22 rifle.

Ended up picking up a rear Williams Fire sight from Midway.

I couldn't find this sight on William's own website so there wasn't much information to go on except that it was for the RAR rear sight. It's advertised as adjustable for elevation and windage but the description and pictures don't tell much about it.

It comes with a tall and short sight. The tall sight is a hair shorter than the front sight post. The short one would work, but would require you to really crank up the rear elevation.

It goes into the rear dovetail and is loose. There is a screw that will tighten the rear sight assembly onto the dovetail. I used blue Loctite for good measure. Once that was in place I was comfortable about the rear sight not going anywhere.

The sight is longer and adds almost 2" to the sight radius. When I pulled it out of the box I couldn't figure out exactly how elevation was adjusted. Makes sense once it's installed and although it isn't elegant, it works. The flat head screw that's in front of the sights lengthens as you turn it clockwise. It pushes against the top of the receiver/barrel assembly thus raising the rear sight. The flathead screw that's actually on the sight tightens the windage adjustment and allows the rear sight to drift left or right.

Basically, the rear sight has 2 points of contact. One in the dovetail, and one at the rear where the elevation screw sits.

It's much improved over the factory rear and fairly simple to adjust. I wouldn't be comfortable with this sight on a fighting rifle, but for a bolt action .22 it should fit the bill.
