Ruger Blackhawk .40

I have a New Model Blackhawk convertible in 38-40/10mm. I recently found that Ruger also produced the Blackhawk model in .40.

I'm wondering if anyone knows if a .40 cylinder (if one could ever be found) would also interchange with my two other cylinders.

Ruger produced a 38-40/.40S&W in a stainless Vaquero, not the Blackhawk. So any cylinder you find will not match your Buckeye Blackhawk. If that's okay then yes, a cylinder could be found and fitted. It may or may not drop-in. The problem will probably be finding one.

Why not contact Ruger? They may have a cylinder, and you would have to get the new cylinder timed anyway. Worth a shot.

Ruger won't do it if the frame isn't marked for it I betcha.

I don't think Ruger will do it for a gun that was not originally equipped that way. If you were missing your 10mm cylinder, surely they would if the parts are available but for the .40S&W, I think you're out of luck. Personally, I find the large frame Blackhawk to be too large for all three chamberings and have a mid-frame Old Model .357 to be converted to .38-40 and probably an extra cylinder for .401Powermag.

I'm curious. The nominal diameter of a 38-40 is .401 inches. The nominal diameter of a 10 MM is exactly .400 inches.

Do you know what the throat diameters of each cylinder is and what the diameter of the barrel is?

Does .001 inches in either of these make any difference in accuracy?

I once found a company in Florida that would make me a cylinder for may Old Model Vaquero in 45acp but they would have charged $500. I would rather just buy a new gun for that price. Good Luck.

38-40 WCF lead bullets are .401"

Modern 38-40 WCF grove diameter is .400", same as .40 S&W & 10MM.
They both use .400" jacketed bullets.
Or, .401" lead bullets.

Wonder if another option might be to get a .357 or 9mm cylinder and have it reamed to .40 S&W?

They both work in the DA smith because not only do the cases headspace on the casemouth, but with moon clips the 40 will work also. There are no moonclips in a SA revolver. If you were to drop a .40 into the cylinder it would fall to far into the cylinder for the hammer to hit it.

I recommend you have the 10mm cyl reamed out to 10 magnum & make proper use of the Blackhawk's frame.

I have a 357/9 convertible, I'd love to have the 10mm version!
