I sold my SR 1911 only because it was a full length gun and I find it much more comfortable to carry a 4". Knowing that Ruger was coming out with a commander made my decision to sell that much easier, plus I made a $150 on the deal. Anyway, now that they are available, I see that they come with 7 round mags and Ruger advertises their capacity as 7+1 while their SR1911 is 8+1. I thought most commander sized guns had full size frames with a shortened slide like my Kimber Pros. I thought that only the officers models had shorter frames. Did Ruger do something different here?

Normal .45 Auto full size 1911 Government/Commander size mags are 7 rounders, though many offer 8 rounders (or 10 rounders).

Normal .45 Auto Officer size mags are 6 rounders, though many offer 7 rounders (now there are even 8 rounders).

Just make sure you buy magazines that are listed as full size or Government/Commander size and you'll be fine.

For instance here's Wilson site http://shopwilsoncombat.com/Magazines/departments/1/

You'll notice you can select full size or compact. Then caliber, then the capacity you want. As long as you pay attention to what you're doing you'll be fine.

The SR1911 CMD comes with two mags--a seven round and an eight round (just like the full size SR1911).

My LGS just (finally) got one in last Friday, and a buddy and I eyeballed it to death. Then we went back on Tuesday, and he bought it (thereby sparing my checking account the indignity of another assault).

We went straight to the range (which was naturally closed for cleaning). Went back Wednesday and he put ~150 rounds through it. He is very happy with his third 1911.

I've looked at a bunch of them in my area. All the SR1911's came with one 7- rounder and one 8-rounder. All the SR1911 CMD's I have seen came with two 7-rounders. Maybe they have changed their policy.

I purchased a Ruger CMD earlier this year.
It came with two 7-round mags....
Ordered a couple of 8 round "Shooting Star" mags, they also fit and work fine.

Thanks for all the responses

I believe that both of the mags that came with my SR1911 were 8 rounders. It is just kind of puzzling why they would advertise them differently when the frame is the same. I have lots of Wilson and Kimber 8 rounders so problem solved. Hi Ho HI Ho it is off to Gun Broker I go.

I don't know for sure what Ruger's reasons are, but in reliability terms, the window for reliability for a Government size gun is just a little better than for a Commander gun. Likewise, the window for reliability for a 7 round mag is just a little better than for an 8 round mag. Can a Commander be as reliable as a Government model, yes, just as 8 round mags be as reliable as 7 round mags. However, I'll guess Ruger is playing the odds by putting 7 rounders with their Commander gun.

Not really that puzzling, it just sounds like they are maximizing your window of reliability.

I'm very picky in regards to 8-rd magazines I'll carry in a serious use 1911...I've had good service with the CMC PowerMag or the Wilson ETM

Odd, my Ruger SR191 Commander came with 2 7 round magazines. Maybe if I jam in one more round to make it an 8 rounder...hmmm...
