Ruger Mark III Hunter

Looking for opinions on a Ruger Mark III Hunter w/Hiviz sight.

Do you think this is a good deal?

I don't have a .22 LR handgun.

glockman19: Sir; The hunter is an outstanding unit. Pricing is as always all over the place. Here in NC my shooting buddy has one set aside for $.350.00-$360.00
It is the same unit. We chased all over NC and found a Dealer we hadn't done any business with; straight up pricing. It actually worked out he is the closest.Typically with Rugers; take the list and deduct approx. $125.00 and you'll be in a good starting ballpark.

I like the Ruger series and many will say that they prefer the I and II over the latest III. That aside...

I have the Hunter. I bought it strictly because of it's looks, not to hunt. I like the fluted barrel. But, I would ask what you are going to do with it? Hunt? This is the Hunter and is set up for that - supposedly. If you are plinking or target shooting, there are others that some prefer, particularly the Target model with the grip that has a thumb rest.

Ah, the Hi Viz sights? My middle-aged eyes hated them. Again, I'm plinking and shooting at paper. I ordered the appropriate set of standard sights from Ruger and swapped them out. I prefer the standard sights and a red dot much, much better.

Can't comment on the price. I paid $400 plus 7% sales tax back in Aug. 2006.

I recently saw a nice Hunter SS BBL fluted with Fiber Optic front sight for about $395. That seemed a bit high but it was a sweet piece. The price on that site seems pretty high... maybe I am missing something?? I love my MKIII target, but I almost wish I had spent a bit more and bought a Hunter.

The V-notch rear sight would really annoy me. When did US gun makers decide that inaccurate rear sight designs on target pistols were somehow cool?

Definitely swap that out for a Patridge-type rear sight -- so add that to the budget for the pistol.

Otherwise, kinda cool. I like its looks.

For that price I would consider picking up a used Ruger MK II and buying a nice Tactical Solutions upper for it.

My first Ruger was a MKIII Hunter. Liked the feel of the grip, liked the fact that my aging eyes could see the front sight. I haven't been disappointed with the pistol.

$459 seems to be an average price for these.

Just to rekindle the MKIII/MKII dispute. I have a MKIII Hunter, MKIII 22/45 and KMKII678GC. Except for the location of the magazine release, I don't see any difference in function, reliability or accuracy. I think the MKIII loaded chamber indicator is a waste. My "LCI" is the bolt back and, as a minimum, eyes peering into the chamber. Does it bother me? No. Nor do I care if the pistol needs a magazine in the grip to fire or not. I bought the MKII because it was at the right price, in excellent shape and I knew from my experience with the MKIII's that it would do very nicely.

If you like the Hunter, it will do very nicely. Nice thing about Rugers is they all seem to do very well.

I picked up a MKIII Hunter when they were first introduced. I've had a MKII for years and love it. When I handled the MKIII... "WOW" The feel, the balance... perfect. I couldn't buy it fast enough. At the range was a different story. I could never get a good sight picture with those fiber optic sights. My eyes just couldn't focus on them. I guess I could have swapped 'em out for more traditional sights, but I ended up trading it off for a Super Blackhawk.

Anybody else have trouble with HI-VIS sights going all blurry on them?

Yup me too, rented one today. I was gonna buy one till I saw it on the rental list now I am glad I waited. The new sights blurred real bad when aimed at a shoot n c. I will however get a MKII Target instead. I still like my MKI the best.

Locktite the front sight and have fun re-assembling after a cleaning! I bought one new. Great gun, excellent shooter with looks but... still worth buying.
