Mini-14

averius: " saw a review recently of a mini 14 in 6.8 SPC. I tried to find this model on Ruger's website, but dont see it. Does anyone here own one of these? Is it a gas piston? Where and for how much cna one be purchased? "

They must make them as the factory sells 6.8 mags.

Actually Leon, I looked at the pic of your rifle and amalgamated it with Kenno's list of alterations. What a dyslexic I am at times. :) Are you keeping the stock sights?

And BCCL, are you keeping your stock sights? I'm deciding what to do with mine.

Yea I am for now. Sometimes I throw a scope on it for hunting but it usually comes right back off. I would not mind getting tech sights on it eventually.

I ordered it through a local gun shop, was $680.00.

what the max capacity for the magazines in 6.8 SPC that these accept? I read soemthing about the barrels getting hot -- or at least they used to with old models..have you experienced anythign like that? How's the recoil? accuracy?

sorry for the 12 questions...I have a few dollars left to spedn for this year on toys and am debating all the options...this oen seems like a viable alternative to the more expensive AR platforms in the same caliber...it is ofcourse a different system...

BTS is this mini gas piston operated?

Largest capacity 6.8 factory mags on Rugers website are 5 round.

I haven't experienced any of thos issues yet, recoil in .223 is virtually non-existent. Not much more than my Ruger 10/22, and accuracy so far has been fine. I forgot my sight adjustment tool when I went out to shoot it, so I couldn't adjust it, but it shoot 55gr FMJ's by Remington and Winchester both just fine.

Yes, Mini-14's use a fixed piston gas system.

The Mini is direct impingement: Gas is funneled out of the barrel and blasted right onto the op-rod.

Here's a review of the Mini I bought. I disassembled it and took some photos of the internals, which you might find interesting.

It looks a bit different now...

And since then I've added a couple more things I deemed useful for its role as a home defense longarm, but haven't had a chance to take photos yet.

That Mini Tactical Model has a flash-hider I intensely dislike. It really looks like a stuck-on afterthought.

My particular Mini is the Davidson's Deluxe, with Circassian walnut stock and the very same flash-hider.

These Minis have the muzzle threaded at 9/16x24, right hand thread. SO DOES THE L1A1 inch-pattern FAL!

The FAL flash-hider costs only $8.60 from Numrich Arms (part number 1085520) , AND it incorporates a bayonet mount. The bayonet (L1A2 or L1A3) costs $39.95 with scabbard (part #884340), so for less than $50 we can have both a decent-looking flash-hider AND an as-issued bayonet set-up.

All that's needed to fit the flash-hider is a hacksaw and a file or coarse stone. Shorten the rear of the FH about a half-inch with the hacksaw, and then file or stone it until it comes within maybe an eighth of a turn from having the bayonet lug at 6:00 o'clock, butting up against the front sight base. Then remove it, apply some LocTite, and tighten it with a suitably-protected pipe wrench (tape) so that the bayonet lug is at true bottom.

This gives an almost seamless match-up between sight base and flash-hider. Flat black high-temperature barbecue spray paint closely matches the Mini's finish and completes a very professional-looking job. The installation only adds about an inch to the overall length, allows mounting a VERY nasty-looking 8" blade, and appears far nicer than the Ruger FH.

Promag makes 20 rounders.

Does the flash suppressor effect the sighting? So if you cite M-14 in then put on flash suppressor do you have to readjust sights?

In all honesty, I don't know if the FH change makes much difference. I didn't notice anything with the iron sights, but I also changed the FH when the rifle was almost new. The Ruger and L1A1 flash-hiders weigh much the same, so I expect the variation might be minor. (Even firing groups with the bayonet mounted didn't make much difference, either in grouping or point of impact.)

My Mini now has a 1-4x Leupold Mark AR mounted, so it's not much of a problem anyway. The new flash-hider DOES make a big difference in the appearance of the rifle. I'll try to get a photo posted.

Finally got around to posting some pics. Hope this works out. I got this Mini from my brother. He and his lady were buying a house so I was sending him a check for a house-warming gift. He didnt feel right about taking my money so he sent me the rifle (plus two 20rd, three 30rd and one 5rd mag, a scope mount, Nikon Scope w/rings and a bucket load of once fired brass, come to think of it, I might have actually gotten a better deal out of it than he did but I digress...).

I added the M14 style pin-on flash hider, Accu-Strut, the Amega scout rail and the Tru-glo red dot. So far I am very happy with it. The target in the picture was shot at 100yds, 10 shots in about a minute using Federal 55gr FMJBTs from Walmart. Not too bad for a Dot-sight that covers about 5-6in on a 100yd target.

I also got one of those straight 20rd mags from TripleK with the green follower. It works well. No problems during my last range day.

Cheers,

Cheers,
I believe 55 grain is the standard for the .223 as they do have them in other weights.

BruceB or anyone who has done this...

How specifically do you remove a flash hider from a new ruger tactical mini 14? I am not a gun smith and only have average joe tools.

I've heard that it has to be heated up for removal.
