Kanook, I thought they didn't have that Mini-30 until recently or so I found out. Is there any difference between these two rifles Mini-14 and Mini-30 other than caliber? Perhaps they feel the same and handle alike other than recoil?
More of the parts are the same than not. They look the same but if you get out a micrometer you can see the differences.

The Mini 14 is available in .222, .223, 5.56, 6.8SPC

The Mini 30 is 7.62x39

I could be wrong on the 5.56 marking but it does interchange in the AC5.56

I was told not to shoot 5.56 through the Mini-14 even though I did put a few rounds through in error like maybe 5 shots or so.
Perhaps if I get another rifle the Mini 30 would be better of the two since it would be a harder hitting round. (124 grains at 2,300 fps vs. .55 grain at 3,000 fps.
I have seen those varmint loads 40 something grains at 3,600 fps in .223.)
Already have a 10/22. Between all of these rifles they all feel and handle good.

6.8SPC:confused: this gets kinda confusing here I thought it was just .223 Remington and now 5.56 now it appears there is different grades in each caliber? I'll have to read that AR-15 website above there seems to be more numbers and sizes that meets the eye. I always thought it was 7.62 x 39 vs. .223 but apparently there are variations of the .223.

Ask your gunsmith to read the cover of one of the manuals. Or the second page says the same thing.

In keeping with my "DC-legal assault-ish rifle" theme, I'm starting to think that a Mini-6.8 might be cool. Mag capacity isn't an issue (DC is limited to 10rds), and theoretically a 6.8 is a better defensive cartridge, and capable of basic hunting if I get into that.

Plus supposedly the 6.8 barrels are sturdier and more accurate than most of the .223 incarnations.

If I'm just keeping it as a defensive rifle, and doing some basic practice with it without blazing through tons of ammo, the 6.8 seems a pretty workable option. Less cheap plinking fodder, but given it's increasing popularity and the eventual calming-down of the ammo market, maybe some more affordable 6.8 may become available.

I'll check that out myself.

Greetings Mini-14 Club--

How's $499 as a price for a blue / wood .223 mini in new-looking condition?

Thanks, Jeff

MatthewVanitas:

Well how about the Mini-30? That's 7.62 a much harder hitting round and it looks exactly like a Mini-14. It makes me wonder if these are very identical in function other than they are two different calibers?:D

The first three numbers are 180. And I should add, I am amazed the store clerk was there when I called--there's a full on blizzard going on today.

I'm guessing, after reading this thread, that 180 indicates an older rifle--I'm not looking for super accuracy--more for social work. I would want to mount some kind of sights that are kind to old eyes--I use bifocal reading glasses, but would not want to hamper fairly quick target acquisition. Am I asking too much? Recommendations appreciatd.

Thanks,

Jeff

I GOT AN OLD ONE FROM 1998 CANNOT GET IT TO GROUP. I THINK BARREL GETS TOO HOT. I SENT IT BACK TO RUGER AND THEY REPLACED EVERYTHING ON IT EXCEPT THE BARREL. I HAVE YET HAD A CHANCE TO GROUP IT OR GET IT DOWN TO THE RANGE.

Hi All--

I thought I should report back here that I made a purchase! I belong to a local gun-rights group, and my little activist commitment is to go around to six of the local gunshops and recruit members, drop of business cards for people to take that show our web site, etc. One of the side benefits of this activity (other than helping our gun rights) is that I get to know where some good gun deals are located. So I basically knew of about a dozen mini-14's of various flavors, one of which was the used one I was originally looking at.

However, I was making my rounds yesterday, and found that one of my stores had a brand new 580 series, which has been sitting on their shelf for quite awhile, on sale for $50.00 off what it was last time I visited. So I up and bought it. It's wood and blue and has the tapered barrel, came with a 20-round mag. I'm off to the range to shoot it today for the first time. I'm thinking of some kind of red-dot or holographic sight (thanks to the guys who PM'd me already), but I don't want to modify it much. I like wood & blue (what can I say, I'm a traditionalist). Don't want a pistol grip, black rifle, etc. I hasten to add that I'm all for anyone having whatever they like, I'm just on my own trip. Kenno, I think your mini is pretty cool--amazing amount of stuff you've done to it w/o changing the appearance all that much. Also thanks to you guys for educating me on the serial numbers and the models. Now I'll go see if I can do anything w/ the ghost ring sights that came with it. If I can get 4" accuracy at 100 yards I may not even bother with a red dot. I have three different kinds of ammo to try out, so I'll start finding out what it likes.

Which ammo are you using? 55 grains, 62 grains or any others?
How is it determined which grains are the best?
55 grains is standard.

I saw a review recently of a mini 14 in 6.8 SPC. I tried to find this model on Ruger's website, but dont see it. Does anyone here own one of these? Is it a gas piston? Where and for how much cna one be purchased?
