My Mini 14 on a budget. The light and sling I got from my brother in law, the rail was $10, the barrel cover was $12, the ring holding the light was from another scope that wasn't in use. The nylon straps were from an old sling that I fashioned to accept the new sling.

I have a Ranch Mini-14 bought it brand new back in 2004 it has a laminated stock cost me $400 brand new with scope. I took off scope because I couldn't hit the target or sight it in. It couldn't even get onto the paper at 100 yards. After a few shots it heated up then shot all over the place.
Now using the peep sight that it came with I can put the rounds on the paper and closer to the bulls-eye but still it is very erratic. Is it because of the heat build up in the barrel? Is this a common problem on all Mini-14's or just on Ranch models?

Here's mine, a 580 series, blue/wood, bought in June of '09. I've got the heavier barrel, which is nice. I put a Burris Fullfield II 3-9x40 scope on it, which is awesome. I bought (4) 20 round Ruger mag's from Midway, the rifle came with one. This thing is a blast to shoot, I really enjoy it. I bought all the stuff to start handloading right away and got started with some 55 grain load's, which shoot 2.5" at 100 yards pretty consistently. I most recently put together some 69 gr Nosler HPBT's with H-4895 and got 1.5" at 100 yards, 10 shots, which is awesome for a mini.:D

Here's a pic:

My new 580 series Mini-14 tactical, shown with its big brother. Just came home today.

Greetings. I picked up this 580 series Tactical at the C&E Gun Show in Hickory, NC this past Saturday. I took it to the range this morning and ran the target out to 25 yards (max distance at the indoor range). Below you will find a pic of my Mini-14 and the results (btw the ammo was 55 gr. Remington UMC).

How much did this one cost?

I paid $400 for a Mini-14 .223 in 2004 with a laminated stock and scope. Would it be cheaper to just buy a new one at 895 instead of sending it to a gunsmith?:uhoh:

I have one too. 184 series, I've had it about a year now. Fun shooter, but I wish I was a better shot. Does the Accu Strut make much of a difference?

183 series stainless. had my tremendously talented father in law take a spare Mini-14 stock and do his work to it. he has done a model 94 and a model 43 winchester as well...all three look beautiful. I haven't done any other mods to this rifle. I really think I don't want to do anything other than replace the rear sight with either an Accuracy Systems M1A style or the XS sight. Also that replacement adjustable gas block looks REALLY nice...but mebbe for later. :)

If you add a flash suppressor/brake muzzel to barrel of Mini-14 will this change sight adjustment vs. having it without?

stinger 327; You should add a flash hider to your Mini, because it helps with its accuracy. The extra weight at the end of the barrel helps to dampen a bit of the barrel harmonics.

Yes, adding a strut to the barrel of a Mini will also help with its accuracy. There are several to choose from, and other similar mods to achieve the same result.

db tanker; Your S/S Mini is similar to my S/S Ranch. Your stock looks nice.

Check out the postings at "The 2010 THR Freeza-Plooza Match". It will give you an idea on what a Mini-14 can do. And, then post your targets.

There are a number of improvements that can be applied to a Mini to make it shoot well. Most are fairly easy and can be done by most enthusiasts.

I do notice that my peep site is different than all the pics I see of the Mini-14's here. Mine is from 1998 and the site flips up and down. There are two screws for elevation with white lines.

Old school Mini-14 with a ghost gray stock. Sorry it was taken with a cell phone and I hardly ever use it.

Hey guys,

I took the gas block off of my Mini-14, and put it back on, is this bad?

haldir,
If you completely removed the gas block from your Mini, then it can affect your accuracy IF you did not re-install it properly. Check the spacing from sided to side to insure you have it as evenas possible. You also should re-torque the four screws. You can go to perfectunion.com and get much better information and answers about your gas block. Thes guys know Minis.
