anyone had their barrel cut down to like 16.5?

i wanna get one of the new ones with a bit heavier barrel from wally world which is like 605 then i was debating cutting it down to 16.5 and having my gs tim recorwn it and put new iron sights on it

any opinions?

would it be better to buy the nra edition one?

borntwice i think the nra ones come with a hogue from the factory

I've a blued GB with folding stock. But it's in Nevada with all my other EBRs. :(

My used 14 was purchased back in January-wood and blued.

What does the GB designation stand for? Can not find it in Wikipedia or aywhere else.
Just wish I had bought a bit more .223 last winter. The Wolf prices have jumped a bit while Wolf x39 have only had tiny increases.

GB = Government Barrel.

Thanks for resurrecting the thread.

Unfortunately, I decided to swap off my stainless GB. It did not meet my reliability requirements, even with factory magazines. I still have my blued Mini-14 which is as reliable like a rock.

Here's mine ...

Hogue Overmolded stock
Leupold Vari-X II 6.5 - 18x AO (nowhere else to put it)
Accuracy Systems adjustable gas block
Accuracy Systems magazine release

I just ordered a Mini14 and a Mini30 ranch/SS. Took advantage of Ruger's sale on 20rnd mags and got 2. Ordered a Nikon Buckmaster 3-9X40 scope today ($170 on eBay). Also ordered a couple of Wolff hammer springs (1 for each). I like the ASI tuneable gas block. How hard was it to install? What do you think of the longer mag release?

The AS adjustable gas block is very easy to install and the AS extended mag release (not as easy to install) is a good upgrade since it provides more leverage. I want to upgrade the trigger next. With 77 grain SMK HPBT bullets and 23.5 grains of RE-15 powder I shot a five-shot 1" group at 50 yards today. With a better trigger I'm sure I could do better than that.

:)

Mine's a project gun. I'll take photos when it's finished, hopefully by the end of the year. A stainless 186 series, I'm cutting it to 16" threading it, adding a GI flash hider, XS front sight, and Ultimak mount. If it does 3 m.o.a. I'll be happy.

Although I know my AR will shoot rings around it, I like the Mini. Now if only Ruger would make last week's 20 rd magazine sale price gun permanent.

I have a 2007 580 series with the skinny barrel. I am going to buy a new 580 with the heavier barrel in the next day or so.

I love shooting this rifle. Its the most fun I've had in a while. Mine shoots a lot better than I expected also. I pick up ARs at every gunshow. They just don't "Do It" for me.

I ordered an NRA edition Mini-14 as a Christmas present to myself. I have owned a Colt SP1 AR-15 for many years, so I decided on the Mini-14 instead of another AR-15 right now.

I also ordered a S&W M29 3" .44 magnum "Bounty Hunter".

The Mini-14 should arrive at my FFL on Monday, 12/22/08. Just in time for Christmas :D

Anyone else notice the rifle shoots more accurately when you just load one round in the chamber and shoot it,no magazine?
I'm wondering if it's just me...

Don't have a picture of it alone, but it's third from the top. Haven't done a thing to it but mount a scope and run some ammo through it

Here's my new (to me) 189 series Mini 30 from the early 1990's. I think this is a 92 or 93 and is a .311" barrel. This is my favorite rifle over my AK/AR/etc/etc - it just looks great and is easy to shoot well. The target here is ~65 yards with Wolf steel 7.62x39, irons, and my first day with the gun. Since then I've also added an M1907 sling that should really help it.

Unfortunately, only some Wolf ammunition works - some batches' primers get dented by the pin but the fail to fire.

Accu Strut came in yesterday and.........

I think it gives the Mini that traditional M14 look. Hopin to make it to the range soon to test it out. Previous "groupings" looked like I was patterning a shotgun so hopefully this will eliminate that.
