I would get a 223, 6.8 is not as easy to find, i have a ss gb mini 14 and love it! If i could just get about 10 more factory mags and a truck load of ammo, i also have a bushmaster ar 15 , but for a boat gun the ss mini 14 would be verry hard to beat! Csa

Ruger Mini 6.8

I have a AR-15 and two uppers, a Garand, an M1A, L1A1, M1 Carbine, AK, SKS, and numerous other rifles. I also have a Mini 6.8. I have very happy with the rifle but not with the price of the ammo. So I bit the bullet and purchased some brass and reloaded. The rifle fires nice and is light. More acurate that I thought it would be. Much better than my brothers Mini 14. I would like some higher capacity mags, but what would be really nice would be 5 rounders that stick out from the bottom a little. For for hunting use. Especially with gloves in our cold fall NY weather.

If you are going to be around water a lot the garand action is less likely to cause problems.

As far as accuracy you are taking a chance with a ruger.

The Ruger would certainly not be a bad choice but, I would go for something in .308 for use in the high seas. I think penetration would be a great asset to have when dealing with armed thugs on a boat.

Get a Saiga .308 with a 16" barrel and have it refinished in Duracoat or something. With the money left over you could buy a decent optic and a couple of 25 round magazines, all for around the price of the Mini-14. Plus, may Saigas shoot about 2-4 MOA so it would be plenty accurate for your intended uses.

Lots of first-time posters in here. Sounds like you need something cheap and rugged. I'd look at a stock Saiga in 7.62 or .223. Or maybe just a SKS.

reelface and i agree totaly. A mini 14 or 30 would be a much more pratical gun. At least ammo can be found and still found farily cheaply.

mini for your boat

a bit of reality here folks:

I would guess this is the typical scenario:

You want to hit torso at 100yrds, from a rocking boat, with sea spray on the gun, suntan lotion on the mags, and margaritta splashed on the action/chamber, and some flecks of sand on the ammo.

You want to be able to pop off 200rnds with confidence, and then not have to spend 2 hrs cleaning your weapon....since you need to get back to the margaritas!

In this case, I'd go with a mini.

Just my $0.02...not that it's worth a lot.

I have a SS ranch rifle for exactly the uses you describe.

On land, I'd go AR, but for a boat gun, nothing beats the stainless steel mini. The AR will rust, and has more nooks and crannies for grit and fish scales. Get a SS/black Bultercreek folding stock on there, a couple boxes of tracers, and you're in business.

Accuracy on a boat is relative with motion. You should fire as the boat is moving up a wave, not on the down-side; i imagine that if a boat was doing something suspicious, i'd let go a tracer or two across their bow, and they'd probably opt to pirate elsewhere at that point. The other benefit of tracers on the sea is that a fuel tank is a bigger target than a torso.

/if only they made SS factory mags. I use pro-mags on the boat since they don't rust.

i have a ruger 224 mini 14 and its one of my favs for sure i dont think youll go wrong with it for sure and I think you'll be able to get your money back out of it if you get in a pinch. Just my $.02

Why do folks keep asserting that 6.8 ammo is difficult to find? That may be true some places, but I have seen 6.8 locally, in both practice and premium loadings, at both a Gander Mountain and a tiny hole-in-the-wall gun shop, when .223/5.56 was virtually unavailable.
