I've long liked the idea of some kind of big bore mini for close range brush hunting. I think I'm probably the only one, though.
Heaven forbid you get interested.FWIW, I have an AR in the safe, 8 stripped lowers and 3 or 4 kits, just can't get interested in the platform
Oh I was interested. The original interest was generated by the appeal of cheap lowers and cheap kits. So I bought and built. But grew weary of seeing every other post on forums about AR's. I'd shoot a High Power match and look down the line at all the AR's. As stated, I know and accept their virtues, but it's like everyone driving the same make, model and color of car just because they're the best.Heaven forbid you get interested.
I would love to see what your mini would do with tuned hand loads and premium match bullets.Oh, the barrel throat, I am really not sure on that. I cant really see where the free bore ends and the throat begins. And my gunsmith didnt tell me. I have yet to experiment with different loads as it shot fantastic out the door with wolf 55 grain .223's. Oh and does very well with basic American Eagle ammo in 55 grain.
As far as single loading goes i just wanted to see if there was a difference in accuracy between the charging handle locking back after being fired and a full cycle.
It does take some of the fun out of it when all the guns have to be tagged so everyone brings home the right gun.Oh I was interested. I'm with you on this except I skipped the AR altogether, got a 581 series Mini 14 Ranch and followed up with a .223 CZ 527 Carbine.I'm with you on that one. If someone wants to buy a Mini-14, he's met with a chorus of "buy an AR"; the same for the guy who wants an M1A ("get a AR-10"), or even a thread about scout rifles, which are, by definition, bolt guns--someone will chime in with "buy an AR". The chorus is deafening--one of the reasons why I traded my AR off for a CZ-527 carbine in 7.62 x 39mm.

Nothing wrong with shooting factory with the groups you're getting. But invest a little $ in a rockchucker, dies and a powder scale. Just adds to the fun of shooting.I could have let my gun smith tune a load specific for that barrel, but my simple 300 dollar upgrade would have turned in to a 700 dollar upgrade. I dont have the equipment for hand loading and I really haven't had enough time with the barrel to test good commercial loads. I just got the barrel twisted on last March and I plan on getting some Hornady match loads in various grains and see witch works out the best. But I do like the fact that it will shoot a common bullet very well.
HAHAHA!! Now THAT is funny! It does take some of the fun out of it when all the guns have to be tagged so everyone brings home the right gun.
I'd like to hear so more from people that actually use mini's at work. Anyone use one for work?
6-10 inch groups at 300 yards?.. my AK gets better grouping with that using M855 or steel cased ammo.. im sure the ruger could achieve this as well, and id personally stick to 62 grain ammo
Did you get that rockchucker yet like I told you? That mini of your's would kick butt loaded up with some Berger's.They can get better groups, I have a Varmint Mini and a few friends of mine own new ones, we are all shooting and hitting 4inch clay pigeons at 300 yards. And as far as the grain of the bullet goes, it really depends on the twist rate of the barrel. A 1 and 9 twist will like 62 grain bullets.

All you need is one of those black&Decker work mates. Mount the press on it. I've done it in a tiny apartment. Roll your own is the only way to go.Oh that will be a while. I'm in the process of building a work shop for reloading and working on firearms. I have a side job re-finishing old rifles, and I'm getting tired of shay-tree work. Maybe by the end of the year when I have everything set up.
Like the M1A? Or something even bigger?I've long liked the idea of some kind of big bore mini for close range brush hunting. I think I'm probably the only one, though.
I think he may be thinking along the lines of the Ruger .44 mag semi auto. Shame they discontinued that gun.Like the M1A? Or something even bigger?
I hear ya. Having a AR is like 3 woman showing up at a party wearing the same dress.i like my Mini 14. I got my Ranch Rifle during the bad old days of the " Assault rifle" ban at that time,a Mini 14 was cheaper than a AR15 and,I sort of like having something just a bit different than what all my buddies are bringing out to the range I can use the same ammo as the AR dudes and the Ruger will do anything I ask of it
