Ruger minis

Heaven forbid you get interested.:D
Oh I was interested. The original interest was generated by the appeal of cheap lowers and cheap kits. So I bought and built. But grew weary of seeing every other post on forums about AR's. I'd shoot a High Power match and look down the line at all the AR's. As stated, I know and accept their virtues, but it's like everyone driving the same make, model and color of car just because they're the best.

Oh, the barrel throat, I am really not sure on that. I cant really see where the free bore ends and the throat begins. And my gunsmith didnt tell me. I have yet to experiment with different loads as it shot fantastic out the door with wolf 55 grain .223's. Oh and does very well with basic American Eagle ammo in 55 grain.

As far as single loading goes i just wanted to see if there was a difference in accuracy between the charging handle locking back after being fired and a full cycle.
I would love to see what your mini would do with tuned hand loads and premium match bullets.

It does take some of the fun out of it when all the guns have to be tagged so everyone brings home the right gun.

I'm with you on that one. If someone wants to buy a Mini-14, he's met with a chorus of "buy an AR"; the same for the guy who wants an M1A ("get a AR-10"), or even a thread about scout rifles, which are, by definition, bolt guns--someone will chime in with "buy an AR". The chorus is deafening--one of the reasons why I traded my AR off for a CZ-527 carbine in 7.62 x 39mm.
I'm with you on this except I skipped the AR altogether, got a 581 series Mini 14 Ranch and followed up with a .223 CZ 527 Carbine.

I could have let my gun smith tune a load specific for that barrel, but my simple 300 dollar upgrade would have turned in to a 700 dollar upgrade. I dont have the equipment for hand loading and I really haven't had enough time with the barrel to test good commercial loads. I just got the barrel twisted on last March and I plan on getting some Hornady match loads in various grains and see witch works out the best. But I do like the fact that it will shoot a common bullet very well.

Nothing wrong with shooting factory with the groups you're getting. But invest a little $ in a rockchucker, dies and a powder scale. Just adds to the fun of shooting.
I bet that mini of yours loaded up with some Sierras would shut the AR crowd up.

The last Mini-14 I owned was during the AWB, when the only 5+ round magazines available were horrifically unreliable.

I sold that Mini-14 after I built a FAL and bought a bunch of mags for that firearm.

My Mini-14 was fairly accurate. I prefer Mini-14 ergonomics to the AR. My AR is more accurate, surprisingly accurate.

A typical Mini-14 should easily dust a typical .30 carbine in terms of accuracy.

I'd like to hear so more from people that actually use mini's at work. Anyone use one for work?

6-10 inch groups at 300 yards?.. my AK gets better grouping with that using M855 or steel cased ammo.. im sure the ruger could achieve this as well, and id personally stick to 62 grain ammo

I have had several Mini's over the years, and all are accurate enough for SD and hunting hogs and coyotes. I have killed a number of them with my mini using iron sights. Is the AR more accurate, probably, but I hate AR's. They are a pain to clean, and anything that needs an "assist" to lock the action is badly designed, in my opinion. The Garand action is much to be preferred. I hated the M-16 and envied the guys in Spec Ops and other units that still had M-14's. Anyway. I now have a Mini Ranch SS with polymer stock and I love it. I killed a hog last week with it at @ 80 yds. Caution, only buy Ruger mags for it. Some of the after market ones do not do well.

Last time I brought my Mini to work with me I got some funny looks :neener:
But, If I was to scratch a mark on the wood stock of my mini for every varmint kill I have with it... I wouldn't have a stock any more ;)

They can get better groups, I have a Varmint Mini and a few friends of mine own new ones, we are all shooting and hitting 4inch clay pigeons at 300 yards. And as far as the grain of the bullet goes, it really depends on the twist rate of the barrel. A 1 and 9 twist will like 62 grain bullets.

Did you get that rockchucker yet like I told you? That mini of your's would kick butt loaded up with some Berger's.

Oh that will be a while. I'm in the process of building a work shop for reloading and working on firearms. I have a side job re-finishing old rifles, and I'm getting tired of shay-tree work. Maybe by the end of the year when I have everything set up.

All you need is one of those black&Decker work mates. Mount the press on it. I've done it in a tiny apartment. Roll your own is the only way to go.

We had to prune this thread of the disagreeable disagreements that derailed it.

The OP and staff would appreciate it if the "combatants" would behave themselves.

ive always had the idea of chopping 7.62x39 brass (or something equivalent with a longer base diameter) to load up with .429 bullets, if someones looking for a "big bore" hunting rifle based on the mini platform, such a wildcat on the mini-30 may only require a barrel change and youd end up with something close to a .444 marlin out of a mini-30

just an idea if someone wants a "big bore" mini all that bad, i guess that straight-walled rimless cartridge would look like a 30 carbine on roids

ive been wanting to find a pistol caliber i could make out of old 7.62x39 or 6.5 grendel brass, ballistics simulations would suggest 10mm ballistics out of a shorter 9mm/40 length action or over 41 mag ballistics out of a 45acp/10mm length action, close to the .460 rowland with less bolt thrust

i like my Mini 14.:) I got my Ranch Rifle during the bad old days of the " Assault rifle" ban:barf: at that time,a Mini 14 was cheaper than a AR15 and,I sort of like having something just a bit different than what all my buddies are bringing out to the range:D I can use the same ammo as the AR dudes and the Ruger will do anything I ask of it:cool:
I hear ya. Having a AR is like 3 woman showing up at a party wearing the same dress.
