I picked up a Ruger Mk II .22 caliber pistol the other day from a guy I know who inherited it. He doesn't know much about firearms, but he tried to clean it up and in the process removed the bluing and let it sit for a awhile. He told me about it and gave it to me (FREE!). It was in sad shape: the bolt was stuck, rust was forming, etc. So after a little initial cleaning I got the bolt working and now in the process of a more detailed cleaning. Going to get it up and running, some new grips and see what kind of finish to put on it. Love this kind of project, get to test out different ideas w/o risking my other guns.
Here are some current pictures:

That's not a very old gun as evidenced by the safety warning on the side. Having said that it is a neglected gun and you did well for getting it for free. I think with a thorough cleaning and detailed field stripping that gun will give you years of faithful service. I would leave it as is if it were me. Good woods/fishing gun!

Go to Rimfire Central if you want the real info and ideas.!

Best 22 pistol around and for FREE. Can't beat that:)

Awesome that you got it for FREE.

Stuff like this is why companies offer DYI Parkerizing solution.

Detail strip that thing, sand blast it and Park it. Will look very nice when your done.

There are also plenty of Dur Coat, Aluma Hyde and Brownell's Teflon Moly (The 3 I have used w/good results) spray on finishes out there.

Don't forget about KG coatings, it's a bake on finish, and like dura coat, it comes in many colors. There are many options, and with just some aftermarket grips, a refinish and drop in trigger parts ( don't like the stock trigger), you have a great gun.
