I recently picked up an absolutely fabulous ruger mkii government target model that had gone for volquartsen for parts and trigger job. (has VQ trigger, hammer, sear, bolt release) it's wonderful. But the bolt's much harder to cock on the new gun than on my other, older mkii. The mainspring housing is more difficult to open too. I assume that means the mainspring is an extra power spring. If so is there any particular reason I should keep it, or could I switch it back to stock or even a lighter spring? (Light primer strikes are the only reason I could come up with for a heavier spring)

(Mods, I don't think this belongs in gunsmithing, but if it does, feel free to move it)

Check out Rimfire Central for all things MKII MKIII related.

But I would NOT go to the lighter mainspring, you will get light strikes. As for the gun feeling stiff, if its new it might just need some breaking in. The MK guns are notoriously stiff from the factory. On my MKIII which is still pretty new, I sometimes need to use a punch to get the mainspring housing to swing all the way out and get it back in. Nothing wrong with the gun, just really stiff and new.

The VQ mainspring is lighter than the stock spring so I doubt you have the VQ mainspring. You might just get a stock Ruger spring and go with that. As for the rest of the VQ parts, good choice, they are excellent. You might want to consider a VQ extractor also, its good insurance against stove-pipes.

On the MK's when you pull the bold back you are actually fighting against 2 springs, the main spring and recoil spring. One it's cocked your only fighting the recoil spring. So you can do a test to see which spring is adding the extra strength. VQ had problems several years ago for light strikes. I think partly because users did not change to the newer main spring, since it required a jig. With the lighter hammer more velocity is required to balance things out. I would not worry as longs as the gun functions correctly. Like tuj said the only other item you may need is the Extractor. Now if overly stiff you may have problem shooting std and subsonic ammo. The only way to tell is shoot it.

Enjoy the gun, they are fun to shoot.
