update...

well after trying to obtain the Ruger SR 1911, at the LGS, (and they cannot even get one right now either), i looked at a few other models in the display cases. I saw a Para Ordinance, and a Remington.

the Para Ordinance is not a name i am familiar with, only to be told that Remington owns them now.

but, the Remington was only a few dollars less, and i put money down on that.

sad thing however, is that only today, was i able to finally pick it up, due to our Queen Tyrant Egoistical goobener extended the purchase wait time, from 7 days, to "up to" 30 days..!!

so i got sick and tired of calling the LGS for an update nearly every day, and in fact, i called them just yesterday at about 4 PM, still no background check!!

well, i said screw it.....i went to the LGS this morning......waited in line, (i was the first guy to be in line), and when i went inside, i had said...

"i just was diving by, and figured i'd stop in"...(of course, that was BS)

the guy smiled, and showed me the email he got from the PD that the background check CAME IN at 9 AM TODAY....!!

(the store opens at 10 daily...!!!!)

so much luck, for "just driving on by"....lol

i took it home, stripped it, cleaned/lubed it, for a trip to the range tomorrow morning.....

i still want that Ruger as well, when they become available....

I have one in Commander size. It's a fine 1911 but honestly, it doesn't stand out in any way, shape or form above my other 1911s. I only got it mainly because I didn't have a Commander yet and I got it used for a pretty good price on Gunbroker. No way I'd pay what the OP mentions even in today's market. Honestly, if you just want a plain jane 1911 that works and is the best gun for the price, you can't go wrong with a Rock Island Armory.

I ended up buying two Dan Wessons earlier this year when I had a 1911 itch. Of the sub $1000 1911s I handled, I thought the S&W overwhelming had the nicest slide to frame fit and overall level of fit and finish. If you can live with an external extractor.
As for my Dan Wessons, I would never part with either. Fantastic guns.

the Ruger i was looking at, at the range i belong to, had a list price of $940 (matte steel finish wood grips)

i would not be paying that price, it would be down to about 750-800

the Remington out the door today, (with taxes) was 650, (black with real wood grips) at the LGS i do business with as well. even THAT was a discounted list price of 774.00

prices are what they are up here in my part of the country.

as i had mentioned in another posting, my LGS does not deal with RIA....

typically, i do not buy used of anything.

however, not if, but WHEN many of those panic buyers sell back thier guns to the stores, i'll highly consider buying something. as it is now, many were sold, hardly many of them go to practice shooting. i was told, by a couple of range employee's.

which means..."hardly used guns" will be available someday.

Because they can't find any ammo, IMO.

Hmmm, maybe, but somehow it seems different "this time around".

In the case of a discretionary item you can wait and see if supply and demand works in your favor; in the case of something you need now, you buy what you can find that does the job and you pay the going price.

took my new R 1911 to the range this morning, with 100 rds, S&B 230 gr. FMJ

a couple of hiccups on my part, i did not get a firm grip on the back strap safety, so nuffin' happened.

and i caught myself limp wristing twice.

once i corrected myself....i could feel a new love affair emerging.

i did well with the targets at 10 yards, not so well at 25 yards. but i wasn't that good my first time, with my CZ 97B either. but later managed to score a 250, out of the high score of 300

i go back Tuesday of next week, (my normal days) and do it again.

tell you what too, even after watching the videos, and reading to owners manual, field stripping is a hoot, the first time....

after this coming Tuesday's range, this 1911, goes into "rotation" for a gun to take to the range, so it could be about 5 more weeks, before it goes back.

i think i can "see" another 1911 in my future.

Congrats on the new pistol. I love my 1911s. I would not be too concerned about buying used guns. Learn what to look for when inspecting a used one, and you can walk away with some great deals. So often people will buy a new gun, run a box or two of ammo through it, and then it sits in the safe or nightstand. I know things vary by where you might live, but for a used SR1911, $750 would be my very top end. I paid that for my 10mm SR1911 brand new. Got lucky just last week. Listed my Glock 17 for sale on TGT. The same day, was offered an even trade of an SR1911 ( 45ACP ). I'll take that trade every day.

 ah hah you're hooked

yeah, i know huh...??

i went back to the store this morning, to pick up some more .45 ACP ammo (forgot the other day). when there, i told the owner that his salesman mentioned a S&W series E, 1911. i looked it up, price listed was $979.

he told me, my price would be $895. but he had nine in stock, which was ok, i wasn't looking to buy today.

but, i'll consider other brands

well i have my druthers about anything used.

damages, scratches, dropped, broken grips, etc, etc.

if i see one, that is is A-1 shape, maybe i might reconsider.

to me, it's like buying a used car....."buyer beware"...

The S&W series E 1911s are quite nice. They use an external extractor and it works well. That’s not a bad price for that gun.

Buddy, I am absolutely with you there. If & when I buy used, the gun has to be in NEW condition. There has been one exception to that rule. Came across an STI Guardian in a pawn shop. But it did not fit what any STI Guardian should look like. So I got the serial number and called STI about it. The guy I spoke with was very surprised. He asked just where did I find this pistol. I just said a local pawn shop. He kinda groaned, said it was indeed one of theirs. It was part of a limited run of about 50 pistols they called the Black Guardian. Per the serial# he said it had been purchased new by an STI employee. Knowing I'd likely NOT see another one, I snagged it up. But it was NOT in NEW condition. Had a bit of holster wear. One of my favorite 1911s though.

Regarding buying used. When someone collects a specific type (Make and Model) of gun it's sort of hard to not buy used. I have a thing for and gravitate towards Colt Series 70 Guns which the last of the series was I believe 1983. Sort of hard finding new on some of the older classic models out of production for decades. Something I have never done is buy used unseen for example over the internet. Actually I gravitate to any 1911 guns as well as guns like the Colt Trooper, S&W Pre Model 27, Model 27, and Model 28 along with several other older guns. I also shoot all of my guns, no new in a box safe queens here. I bought them for enjoyment and not investment.

A few Gold Cups in the mix and all bought used, albeit slightly used but used. :)

That's a really nice lineup.

Most of my guns were bought used. They don't even make most of what I like anymore... so they have to be used. Scratches, dings, and dents don't bother me. I have passed up a few with some ugly screwdriver marks, which were probably perfectly fine, but the gouges made me think twice. .... but now I wish I had bought that 2" Lawman MkIII for $375...... :D

The SR 1911 is a good gun for the money. I had a Commander sized gun but eventually traded it towards something else. Wish I had held onto it!

I have zero complaints with my SR1911, even with it being an early model. It has been hammer reliable so far. For about the same money my brother bought a Remington R1 enhanced and it may have better fit and finish than my Ruger. His has been awesome, too. I just don't believe that you could go wrong with either...or both.

My Remington 1911 R1S has the best 1911 trigger I've ever felt. I measured it at 3 1/4 lbs. this morning and without felt creep or backlash. When I found it a Cabelas, I compared all the "reasonably-priced" 1911s in the showcase and it was absolutely the best and it's gotten even better with use!!! It's even better than the Gold Cup National Match that I inherited from my B.I.L.'s passing.

I love Pachmayr grips, so have ditched beauty for performance. If I "needed" another 1911, I'd buy the same make, but I'm pretty-well covered right now!

well, this is the way i feel as well, with my new (2019 built) R-1911. mine however is blued., they did not have SS in the showcase. other than switching out the main spring housing, for a metal one, it has worked pretty darned good for me. i might however, change out the grips for either rubber or plastic. i might also add a magwell, but that's not really important at this time.
