Backstory:
A few months back I purchased a old 1984 ASM 1860 army from gunbroker.
Before the gun shipped out the owner of the gunbroker ad called me and said a employee of his had misrepresented the gun when writing the ad.
He offered to give me my money back or I could keep the gun and get a slight refund or when the gun came if I didnt want it I could send it back for a full refund.

I chose to keep the gun.

The ad said the gun was immaculate and it looked to be in fair condition on the outside minus a few pits and rust from age.

When the pistol arrived it was ate up with rust on the outside and had a good bit of pitting inside the bore. The internals looked to be one solid mass of rust.

I cleaned it up as good as I could with elbow grease and a brass brush and lots of oil.

I took it out yesterday and didnt think it would be much of a shooter. Honestly I only bought the gun for parts.

To my amazement it placed all 5 shots in damn near 1 hole. You could cover the group with a 50 cent piece.

20 ish yards offhand duelist style

I sprayed a dot of rem oil on my cardboard target and that was my aiming point for that group.

Load used was
35 grains goex OE
.457 cast round ball

After seeing that group I then played around with distance shooting and the gun true to its prior grouping was quite accurate at different distances.

I had planned to use the gun as a parts gun but after seeing the group I brought the gun home and proceeded to clean it and let the frame sit in evaporust for 8 hours.

I then reblued it with birchwood Casey
Added slixshot nipples
Replaced hammer with new ASM hammer from deer creek.
Replaced hand
Replaced trigger and bolt spring
Kept stock bolt and cleaned it up as best I could.

Attached is a photo of the group shot and a picture of the finished pistol.

Yesterday I learned a valuable lesson.

The ugly girl may very well be the best girl you'll ever have! Give her a chance!

Do you guys have any rusty, ugly, or Poorly machined pistols that will shoot a flea off a gnats ass?

If so please tell us the story about your ugly pistol and share some pics :)

Nice shooting and good offer from the owner . That makes me want to go look at that ASM that I saw for sale , but he also has a Pietta 1851 for sale and he is asking $375 dollars for . That makes me not want to buy from him .

If I was to buy a pietta id go to midway and get a new one for 350ish.

Piettas are excellent. They work and they work well.

ASM just feel better in the hand to me.

That's a great story (and lesson for us all). And you did a fine job refinishing what sounded like junk. The deep blue you achieved goes really well with the dark stain on the grips.

Jeff

Jeff,

Thanks for the kind words brother. I'm excited for the new life and possibilities for the ASM 1860 :)
