My dad has a square butt .38sp S&W with a bull barrel and it's only clue to name is "mod. 10-6" under the cylinder latch. What is it? It shoots great, I can hit with it at ranges all my other pistols only dream about.

The model 10 has been in production since 1899, know then as the .38 Military & Police. Model number were not assigned until 1957. They are the quintessential military and law enforcement gun of a bygone era. The guns as you have already noted, are chamber to fire the .38 S&W Special; are built on the "K" or medium frame. S&W has produced many fine guns in diferent frame sizes each to fit a particuliar nitch or requirement. The "K" frame is a very well balanced carryable gun. The -6 indicates the 6th engineering change and was produced from 1962 untill 1977. If the serial number has a "D" in it that would make it post 1967. The S.N. can be found on the bottom of the grip frame and with it we can thighten up on that date some. They are, as you have also noted, an excellent choice in weaponary.

In my not so humble opinion, the Smith & wesson model 10 is one of the finest handguns (includes pistols and revolvers) ever made. They just get better with age and use.
Of course I love shooting 38 special!

A 10-6? Interesting, as it appears that S&W skipped the -6 with that model. Obviously, there's just a gap in data, but this page will give you an idea of the engineering changes the model has gone through.

And yeah, that's one fine pistol you've got.

Erik,
My Information indicates that the -6 was used starting in 1962 with the elimanation of the trigger guard screw on the heavy barrel, follow by begining of the "D" s.n. prefixes in 1967 and then in 1968 the deletion of the diamond insert grips. In 1977 the -7 EC with a relocation of the gas ring on the standard barrel and the same year the -8 EC the same modification to the heavy barrel. Other modification where made on the -8 but follow in subsequent years. This data was taken from the SCSW 2nd ed.

I have a Model 10-6 heavy barrel and it is one of my favorites as well. With full size grips recoil is light and it is easy to hit with, as you know already.

It's amazing the way a good revolver can shoot. In most cases I think I'd be more confident with this 10-6 than with a rifle. With a little warm up, I can hit like I've got a benchrest with the thing.
