I was wondering about the S&W 1911. I have looked them over and the only thing that really concerns me is the external extractor.

While most 1911's have the extractor apart of the slide the S&W have the extractor as a seperate part.

Does anyone have any experience with the S&W 1911's????????

Most 1911's don't have extractors as part of the slide, they have seperate parts called extractors that are contained within the slide.

There are any number of conficting opinions as to which is better, an internal or external extractor so I think it doesn't matter much if it works. The S&W extractors generally work just fine.

I have a S&W 1911, full size 5" Bbl.l in Stainless Steel and
the fixed Novak SIghts. It ran pretty good out of the box
with just a few FTF through the first 400-500 rds, it's settled
in, and if kept clean and lubed runs fine. In over 1300 rounds
to date, it has never had any Failure to Extract (FTE)s

S&W 1911s design of the external extractor is spring loaded
and doesn't need 'tuning' like some individual examples with the
original design. Of course any company can put out the
occaisional gun that may have issues. S&W customer service is
as good as any company on the market. IMHO & IME of
course.

It appears to be similar, if not identical, in design to the extractor used for many years on their other pistols. It must work, since I've never had any S&W pistol I've owned malfunction. The only disadvantage, if you could call it that, might be that it is not easily replaced without tools and training, unlike the original design. I would not let this bother me.

I have a strange feeling I've said this before. ;)
