Was browsing in a gun shop today, and found an S&W 1917. It was a bit rough, finish-wise, several dings around the trigger guard and on the outboard side plate, and the blue is fairly worn. Bore is bright, and although the rifling is fairly shallow, I understand that's normal for these.

Lock up was tight, didn't get to run thru the full function check ala Jim March, but looks like this was carried a lot and shot very little.

This would be a shooter obviously. Price is $350. Is this good, bad, or ugly?

Thanks!

As promised, the gun shop was Antique and Modern Firearms in Lexington. The 1917 is a Genuine G.I. with lanyard ring, not a Brazilian issue. The butt is marked: US Army Model 1917. Serial # is:1439xx.

Can somebody tell me how old my latest acquisition is please? Thanks!

$350 is a pretty good price for a shooter version. I paid $300 for this refinishied commercial version a couple of years ago.

Prices are going up. Most that I've seen actually selling recently are in the $450 --> $650 range.

mrstang01:

Your S&W model 1917 was made sometime during November, 1918.

Ya got ripped off pretty bad. Uncle Sam only paid $15.60 for the gun brand new and S&W threw in a pair of half-moon clips ... :D :D

1917 Colts and S&Ws were all over the place in the 1960s for $25-30. I never had that kind of big bucks as a kid so missed out.

Come to think of it I would rather have one of those big old horse pistols than some scandium girly gun.

I guess I'll have to stand the frelling I got, cuz I think I got a fine deal! They are located right off Nicholasville Road. I bet if you've got a gun interest, they've got a sample, everything from old flintlocks to new Grocks. Anything specific in mind?

If I lived in that area those guys at A&M would likely be among my bestest friends. While their new gun prices aren't spectacular, they do some wonderful wheelin' and dealin' with the used stuff.
