What would be the going rate for a 28-2 4" in about 90% condition? It has a little honest finish wear around the muzzle end and the cylinder. I'm agonizing over this one. I want it, but I want a lot of things.

Any help I can get would be fantastic!

Up here in the Boise area alot depends on condition and barrel length. The few 4" models (which aren't many) I've come across tend to run between $375 and $425. Give or take a few dollars. On the other hand the 6" models seem to be more plentiful and average around $350.00. It seems that much depends on the region that you're in. I haven't seen any M28's that I would rate below 90%.

28-2

Bought mine about 4 years ago at the local hangout, I believe that I paid about $350.00 for mine. It is about 95 % (a little wear on one side of the muzzle)

My opinion is if you want one and have one in sight buy it. Then if you find another one later on you can do it again....lol

Thanks for the replies so far.

When buying my first gun, I knew I wanted a .357 revolver. I really wanted a brand-new gun. I could have gotten a used 28-2 4", or a new Taurus. While I have always loved the Taurus, I've remembered that Smith, and now one is available for a sub-$300 price. I think I'm going to take it, but keep the replies coming!

I bought a 6", 98 per center out of Mt. Vernon, IL in December of '98 for $270 shipped to my FFL~!
Well you would, Dan old friend :banghead: :neener: :D Mind you - allowing for inflation and prices rising, maybe in the right area if we upped that a bit for nowadays. Bet you love it too.

I honestly forget without a lot of paperwork digging, exactly what I paid for this one but - bought it from a member - darn, it's hard to recall these things. Was it Atticus maybe? Anyways IIRC it was approx $350 coupla years ago - lovely hammer bobbing, chamber mouth chamfering and a trigger job. Can I say butter!!

It is a much loved gun and while I have a coupla M27-2's - this fella would be (and has been) the one for carry.

I know the 6 inchers are less desireable to some. I prefer them, as I don't carry mine. That said I bought a 95% 6 incher last year for $260. Couldn't get the money out of my wallet fast enough. :)

Actually Chris my friend that S&W model 28-2 was a dud~!:( from
the get go~!:uhoh: It arrived with a severe timing problem, thus ending
my internet purchases of firearms. Only, if a reptuable seller allows a 3
day inspection/return policy would I ever buy from the web again.

Cosmetically, the gun was perfect; and may have even fooled the
seller that I bought if from? I truely believe that this is why he had
this firearm in the first place; cause the original owner knew that it
needed a quick trip too a qualified 'smith~!

This gun was bought to use in Postal Pistol Matches, and NEVER
performed the way it should have. Thus, in April of 2001 I replaced
it with a brand new 6" S&W 686-5, and have NEVER looked back.

For a while the prices on the 28s were crazy. I saw a few selling for more than the 27s next to them on the table. Beats me as the 27 is much nicer.

In the past year or so sanity has returned and I see 28s going for $300 or less. I bought two last year. A 4" Pre-28 in about 95% condition for $290 and a 75% 4" 28-2 from 1970 for $240.

A nice 28 at $300 is a good deal in my book.

SLCDave, I think I have seen the revolver you are talking about. If not, I have seen a 28-2 that is advertised at a really low price.

Unless it is terribly out of time, or has bad cylinder end shake(I doubt it, these are stout guns), it is a steal at the advertised price.

I would have bought it myself, but funds are not available.

Unfortunately, the gun money just went to 2 unexpected bills that hit me this week. :banghead: I talked to the seller, who is in no hurry to sell, and I'll jump on it if it's still available in the future.
