About five years ago I was in a local LGS and looking at a nice 4" 686. I had walked in the door actually looking for an N frame. I didn't see any in the display case and spied the 686. After checking the action and looking it over, I decided to go with it. While starting the paperwork, I mentioned to the salesman that I came in kind of looking for a N frame. "I got a model 4" 28 that we haven't put out yet because it needs to be cleaned up." I looked it over and other than a little dirty, it was in fine shape and I already had an L frame (model 581). And the price was same as the 686. $365 out the door. I haven't seen that kind of a deal on a 686 since. The 28-2 is a great range/field revolver. Will handle almost any .357 load and built solid. Either way you go, both sound pretty good.

Thanks for all the great suggestions.
I think i am going with the 2.5" for 2 reasons- perfect woods gun and in a pinch ccw. I will then wait and acquire a nice 5 or 6" revolver for range and hunting..
If i am going to only keep 2 revolvers for right now(finances) might as well have purposes for both, right??

And with that being said...my 3rd revolver will be a pre lock model 28!!!!

Thanks guys...

3rd revolver may take a while to get though....

I know you'll enjoy it. That reminds me, I need to shoot mine again soon. Been playing with other calibers.

here she is

Does having 2 of these 2.5" 686's make me a hoarder?:D

No...it makes you a....

Well, I don't like the muzzle blast of 357s with less than 4" barrels (and its still bad with the 4" barrel). I do have a 4" barrel 686 and its a very nice wheel gun.
