Apparently Smith & Wesson has a funny bone.
I didn’t post this as an April Fool’s joke. It is funny, but can you imagine what shooting something like this would be like?
I can tell you I wouldn’t shoot it even if given one.
A nice guy at the range one day offered to let me shoot his full sized S&W 500. I thanked him and politely declined.

So, would you shoot something like this April Fool’s gag?

It's seems like it would be the perfect answer to the "What gun to carry for bears while backpacking?" question. I mean, it wouldn't weigh much (not counting the ammo) and it would probably be powerful enough to stop a grizzly. Of course, it might do more damage to the backpacker than the grizzly would have, but that's beside the point. :D

My Model 69 is as close to that as I’d ever want to get. It’s the only gun of mine that actually made me bleed after one cylinder - tore the webbing next to my thumb right open. Glad the 500J is a gag…although hand surgeons wouldn’t mind seeing it go to market. Good for business!

I have a 640 pro 357mag, now I'm gonna have to go shoot it with 357mag just to see how bad it is. I do have bad arthritis in my dominant hand, but I have to at least try it.
I do have a hand doctor, already had 3 surgerys supposed to have a 4th.

Brings to mind the video of the middle eastern type shooting an elephant gun! Surely the Smith would've smacked him in the head !

Guy at the outdoor club range had a full sized .500 S&W and offered to let me shoot it. I mentally prepped myself to do what I try to do with my .40 and .45: hold on but don't fight the recoil let it happen then recover. I hit a large rock on the 55yd (50m) bank cut on the hillside. I thought awesome. He said go ahead. I shot again and hit the rock. I told him awesome and returned the gun. I declined his offer to shoot the whole cylinder, saying that ammo must be expensive. Thought to myself if. I tried a third shot I was gonna flinch like crazy and miss the rock. Maybe miss the bank. Or the mountain.

That 500 J frame (if it's real and not April Fool) is easily half the weight of a full sized 500 revolver. Half the weight, roughly twice the recoil velocity. Kinetic energy equals mass times the square of the velocity. That 500 J frame would have recoil energy on the wrist transplant end of the scale. Not quite four times the recoil energy of a proper weight 500 revolver, but too much for me.

Recoil and Recoil tolerance?

A close friend had a S&W 500 with a 8 3/8" barrel that was factory ported. At something like 72 ounces it was very manageable.
He also had a 480 Ruger Super Redhawk. I shot it before he had it ported. I thought it was manageable, but he didn't like the recoil. After porting he loved it.
The Freedom Arms 454 needed to be ported. It was a painful experience.

My S&W 69 44mag with stout loads is uncomfortable. My ported Taurus 415 41mag is a little more manageable. As my Taurus 605 357mag in a steel frame is ok.

None of the handguns are something that I would want to shoot hundreds of rounds through during a single range session....

The steel frame J .357s are not fun but they’re nowhere near as nasty as the 340/340PD with aluminum or scandium frames. They are truly painful.
