S&W 610

The BMT Mooner is an amazing tool, especially the version for rimmed catridges but the rimless version is great too.

BMT Equipped moon tools are the cat’s meow but they are a bit pricey for some.

I have an S&W 610 with a BMT Equipped moonclip tools as well as BMT Equipped tools for a J-Frame 38 Special revolver, 9x19 SP101, and 45 ACP N-Frame ( Model 25-2, 625) revolvers.

Moonclips rule.

Looks like my quest for a 610 just got a bump on the priority list.

Today, at the family's Easter dinner, my sister (I have twin sisters) asked me if she could have one of our fathers handguns that I inherited when he passed away in '05.

I had received from my dad (among others) a 4" stainless Ruger Security Six that I gave to my other sister for HD.

I have had an identical one for 25 years (my dad bought his after shooting, and liking, mine) and offered it to my sister today (they would both end up with identical revolvers)

It's not one of our dads but everything else from my dad were a 629, 1911's, and a couple of .22's; nothing she's interested in.

However that would leave me without my only medium frame .357 (I do have a 5½" Taylor's Smoke Wagon in .357)

Now, I'm well aware that picking up a 610 to replace a Security Six is definitely not a 1:1 replacement but, under the circumstances it definitely making it easier to justify the $$ for the 610.

Well, I hit up the gunshow today.

I saw exactly one 10mm revolver, a S&W 610 no dash.

Labeled NIB but no price so, already having a ballpark answer in mind, I asked.

$2100.

So, on the way home, I hit 3 more shops: all 3 had them in the case, two shops had $1099, one $1089 and finally, the shop I had stopped at a few days ago: $1049.

So, after giving it a thorough going over, I brought it home.

Y-T71, Long time 10MM revolver fan here. I had two of the 5" no dash 610s, and one of the .38-40/10MM Blackhawks back in the day. Excellent revolvers all, wish I'd hung onto at least one of the 610s. More recently, I got to handle a newer 610 with the lock like yours. Very nice, with a very smooth double action. Smoother than my current Ruger GP100 10MM. I like my GP100, but the 610 just felt more refined overall. Enjoy yours.

I have to say, aside from the moral objections of the lock and my prejudice against MIM on something as iconic as a S&W revolver (that's 100% on me, not the revolver) this revolver rivals the fit an finish of all the S&W revolvers I've owned over the years.

The trigger is absolutely amazing; not as good as my 629-2 with a million rds shot but as good or better than my 629-3, a 617 no dash that I sold and two 66's; one no dash and one -1.

I've read enough horror stories about S&W's QC that I wouldn't buy one online, sight unseen but I'm currently under the opinion that, if you get a good one, they rival the quality of many of the previous models.

Y-T71, Like many others, I don't like the idea of MIM, but have owned a few S&W revolvers with the MIM lockwork. Couple characteristics I noticed in comparison with the new S&W revolvers I acquired back in the '70s and '80s. My S&Ws with the MIM lockwork were all very smooth in double action, and all timed up properly. I cannot say the same of some of the pre-MIM S&Ws I've owned over the years.
