S&W 659 Extractor Change

When the 639/539/659/559 were first introduced, they had oversize extractors, which S&W boasted were more reliable. I liked the design myself and was amazed when they switched back to the skinny extractors (similar to those used in the 39/59) without comment.

Did the new extractors have a problem? What was the story? Does anyone have any photos of the old guns?

The new & improved extractor proved to be more trouble prone then the old one it replace. The third design corrected the problems with the 1st. & 2nd extractor designs.
It is better then the older ones.

What about those with the old extractors? Were they trouble prone enough that S&W would replace them? I remember thinking that they really looked nice.
