I'm bidding on a Smith model 659 on Gunbroker right now which is in decent shape. At the moment it is at my max bid of $255 (it started at $135) and I am debating if I want to increase my bid. I have many 9mms in my collection and am looking for things which will appreciate in value and I can shoot. I notice the 59 and 659 generally don't sell really high but my question is how much are they likley to appreciate over the next 5 - 10 years??

If you are referring to this one;

The 2 additional factory mags are worth at least $60 by themselves. That puts the 659 with a buy it now of $309.95. It's a good deal for the condition of the pistol. Lowest priced 659's with a single mag have been going for the mid-300's lately.

I can almost guarantee that the auction will end with the buy-it-now of $369.95.

Many were used police guns. They have not really went up in price in years. Not likley to appreciate. $350 top price with 2 magazines. IMO. FYI sold for $260.

The one you posted probably will not be a good investment. There are too many nicks and dings on it. And why anyone would mar a gun like that is beyond me. I've always disliked Smith's leaving the slides with a sandblasted finish. It's impossible to buff out and you really need to polish it; and if you don't have the equipment, it's a real pain.

I have a photographer friend who bought a beautiful new Olympus SLR back in the 70s. The first thing the guy did was take a nail and then he proceeded to deface the camera. When I asked him why he'd do such a horrible thing, he said, "I'm a professional photographer. These are my tools and I don't care what they look like. If I deface my equipment, I don't need to worry about having it stolen. It works perfectly and no one wants it." He had lost some nice camera equipment in Italy, where they steal anything of value that's not completely secured.

I could see his reasoning, but guns last many years and are rarely used for what they were purchased for. This gun is most likely a great shooter. It's not like having an old German Luger, which jams every other round and is a collector's item at best...something you take out of a safe and show someone and then put back in.

If you want to shoot this gun or use it for a drawer gun, this gun will do the job. But it's most likely a crummy investment.

Most of these are police trade-ins -- carry anything on your hip and get in and out of a car many times a day and that is what happens.

They are generally bad for collecting, but generally great for shooting as most have only been shot a few times a year for qualifying, but they get beat up from daily carry.

It went for buy-it-now @ $369.95 plus $25 shipping and no, I did not buy it. Although I was tempted if it were not for the holidays and the endless gift giving.

59's, x59's, 59xx's, & 91x's in fair to good condition are generally going for $300 - $350. Very Good to Excellent ones are going for $350 to above $400. If the 5906's were still made for the civilian commercial market today, they could easily fetch the same prices of the all steel Sig's.

The CDNN & LE trade-in supplies are drying up. Get 'em while you still can at those low prices. I mean, why pay close to $300 for a CZ-82 when you can buy a 3rd Gen Smith?
