Hello,

I have located a M&P15 MOE for a great price, but it is the discontinued model. It has the standard setup for the MOE model and the only differences I can find between the new MOE S&W is offering and the older one is that the discontinued model has a chrome-lined barrel whereas the new model released by S&W has a 'melonite finish' and the barrel material is listed as 4150CMV.

There are some less significant upgrades to the newer model (foregrip, some DVDs, perhaps a different stamp on the receiver) but all seem to be minor details and not things I am overly concerned with. But a quality barrel is important to me. I imagine the price difference will be about $200 less for the discontinued model if I go for it.

Can you all please provide some input on the differences between a chrome-lined barrel and this melonite S&W is now using. I've always thought that chrome-lining was a good thing, but I would like a second opinion before begging the wife for some cash to pull the trigger.

Thanks.

I would raether have the CL barrel.
My Smith (melonite) AR is the only one I have that won't eat steel case ammo without issues.
Now, these issues may not be bbl related, but it has left a bad taste in my mouth.

The way I understand it is melonite is a nitriding hardening of the steel similar to glock tennifer. In this process nitrogen is embedded in the steel and the surface becomes very hard and slick and is supposed to be very corrosion resistant. The only "advantage" to this is this does not change the original dimensions of the barrel. Since chrome lining is adding material to the barrel the argument has been made it can go on uneven and affect accuracy. Whether this is a valid argument or not I dont know as FN chrome lines one of their "sniper rifles" known for accuracy. Both barrels are most likely quality and I doubt you'll be unhappy with either.

You can get a Colt 6920 with the Magpul accessories for $1100, that includes the butt stock, grip, extra clearance trigger guard, two magazines, rear buis, fore end , and a foregrip. Why would you bother with a Smith?

The Colts can be a tad hard to find right now, but they can be found with a little perserverance.
