Does anyone know about the Smith M99 / Walther P99?

I read a short article about them in an old Gun digest, then lo and behold, a S&W version 9mm showed up at the LGS for $399. I can't stop thinking about it.

What did you want to know?

I prefer the Walther version for it's tapered slide....it appeared in one of the Bond films

It has a long SA trigger pull, but a very short reset. I really like the location of the de-cocker on top of the slide

I have a Walther P99AS and it is a wonderful firearm. Never had any failures of any kind with it even with low grade ammo. The SW99 is clone, albeit a bad one, of the Walther. The grip angle of the SW99 is different from the P99 and as mentioned the Walther has a tapered slide.

wrong - the frames are identical. maybe you saw different backstraps on the pistols. most of the SW99's are in 40 cal but I have seen a few in 9mm. either pistol in 40 is the snappiest 40 I've ever shot due to it's light weight and hi bore axis. my P99AS was very accurate and had a sweet trigger.

easy carry gun but for long range sessions I can think of plenty of other pistols I'd rather be shooting

btw, $399. seems a bit high for the Smith version. I've seen them as low as $300. at my LGS. try Gunbroker.

It probably was the backstrap. The Walther comes with 3 and I have never looked in the box at the SW99 to see how many that comes with. Probably 3 as well. The SW99 I handled probably had the large or small as I am used to the medium. Definitely need a good set of punches or at least one to change out the backstraps. The 40 is pretty snappy if you are shooting 180gr. The recoil is much more manageable if you feed 165gr instead, at least in mine.

S&W also produced the SW99 in 45 ACP for a year or two---I have one I purchased used but very nice condition---I had previously fired a Walther P99 9mm and liked it a lot, so when the 45 came along at a very resonable price, I picked it up just for fun. Now having shot a couple more P99s in 9mm and the S&W pistol, there really ain't nothing in it---they're really just P99s---even the S&Ws frame is made in Germany by Walther. I find myself actually liking the lightweight 45 and find it accurate and reliable---I think I'll keep it.

Exwept for the cosmetic differences in the slides the S&W 99 and Wakther P99 are physically identical. The came with at least two differnt trigers. I have the As in my S&W99 and the QA in my Walther P99. Both guns have been totally reliable and quite accurate considering their short barrels.
