I have a shield 40 for edc works great
And reliable fills that slot well as a small single stack for edc

My Shield, when it was brand new, was really stiff. After I put about 1,000 rounds through it, it's very manageable now. The magazines were really tough to load but same thing, once you get a few hundred rounds through them, they loosen up nicely. Might want to look for a used Shield if you find the springs too stiff. The trigger gets smoother too with a few thousand down the pipe. Love my Shield, I have four others on my CCW but rarely carry them because the Shield just fits me, I can usually barely tell I am wearing it.

I have become very fond of my Shield, as well. It just really hits the sweet spot for a CCW! I bought one basically just see what all the hype was about and honesty didn't figure I'd be so happy with it...It's a keeper!

I have to ask, I handled the Shield recently in the store but after it was given to me with the slide racked, I couldn't get the slide release to engage. Why is this so hard? I tried to grab it like a sling shot to no avail. I just couldn't move that slide so I gave up and moved on to a another gun. I'm curious how everyone gets past this aspect of the Shield.

They are stiff for a few, I don't use the slide stop to release, a good pull back on it is how we are trained. The slide stop is used just for stopping the slide and not to be used to release it or it wears out faster. I put the gun in the web of my hand and give a pull back fingers pointed at me. if that helps or makes sense..... Working nights and feel a little woozy!

Maybe it's better to try and cup the slide instead of the sling shot method for you and shield. My wife refused cupping and insisted on sling-shotting all her autos until she got a PPQ, which she cups over. She continues to use slingshot on everything else. I only apply slingshot to Berettas and CZ-75, where the grasp area is very narrow.
