I was digging around in my gun area this morning and found the box my S&W Model-17-4 came in. I got it used in Oct; 2003. It has a 6" barrel and it's blued. Serial # 89K91XX. The original paper work was missing.

There are white stickers/labels on each end of the box. One is too faded to read but the other is missis in the right end but the other is readable. The are two blocks on the sticker under "Special Features." One says "9K9" and the other says "174" in handwritten ink.

My question is, what does the Special Features codes mean? Do I have a collectors item or just a very nice shooter?

P.S. The receit was in the box from when I purchased it.I paid $130.00 plus tax. It was in like new condition. :D

Those numbers seem to be a part of the serial number, and the model number. The guys who filled out that label often did "color outside the lines". FWIW, special features would not necessarily be very special. They include target trigger, target hammer, target stocks, white outline rear sight, red insert front sight, etc. In other words, fairly common options.

I have several of the old paper boxes with the reinforced metal corners.

Usually what is written in by hand is the serial and model numbers. Back then, you could order a pistol from S&W with a number of different options...it was very common.

What is interesting is that the box is actually pretty valuable

I took the "174" to be the model number 17-4, but it could be the last three of the serial number. Let's see what the OP says.
