Does the S&W1911 take aftermarket mags? A co-worker was thinking of buying a S&W1911 today, but was put off by the $40/mag price tag the dealer wanted for extra mags from S&W.

I told him I believe the S&W 1911 will take 1911 model magazines made by Wilson and Chip McCormick, but I don't know that for certain.

Anyone tried aftermarket mags for their S&W1911?

Any standard sized magazine for a government/commander 1911 will work just fine. I have 2 Chip McCormick's and 1 Wilson that I use without any issues.

You can use any standard (not compact) 1911 magazines, insofar as they fit into the grip. With all the different designs of guns, magazines and combinations thereof, you may have to do some experimentation to see which one(s) function best.

Chip McCormick work fine in mine, but the Act-Mag that came with it are really good 1911 mags. You get what you pay for and a lot 1911 issues are mag related. I'm not a fan of Wilson 1911 mags, I've had more problems with those than the Act-Mag or McCormick. The McCormick 10rd mags are vary reliable in my hands.

+1 and +1 to what has already been said.

My two SW1911s love the ACT mags they came with, but also function just fine with Chip McCormick mags and Wilson Combat mags.

Thanks, all! I've printed out this thread, and I'll pass it along.

Mine (sku 108284) takes and uses any mag made by anybody...even cheap gun show mags! It even shoots with a POS 11 rounder that won't work in any other pistol!
