Hello all, looking to buy my first real rifle and I was just wondering if the EAA Saiga falls under the "Assault Weapon" label. I'm only 19 so I'm not yet allowed to purchase such guns yet.

Although the gun is not listed on any of the Assault Weapon lists that I found, I'm still not sure if it is considered an assault weapon because of its AK action. Every list says that the "AK-47 in every form" is banned.

If there is anyone out there who knows for sure, please let me know.

Oh yeah, can the Saiga take regular AK mags or does EAA have their own proprietary mags?

Thanks in advance for any and all information.

The Saiga uses 5rd or 10rd mags but can be legally modified to take AK mags.

Use the search engine here and look up the Saigas. Plenty of info in the last months.

I don't think it is a regulated weapon here. I belive it is considered a sporting gun (hunting rifle)

Just call around to a couple different gun stores a check. They should know if it's a regulated firearm

a sticky wicket

my vepr required no wait

i think the vepr and saiga are exempt from the AK-47 definition
and the HBAR AR15 is exempt from the AR15 definition

Well...

The gun store I usually go to told me that it is regulated. I'm still not 100% sure if they are right so I believe that I will check around a little bit more. It really seems to be a fanatastic value and is pretty much exactly what I'm looking for.

Thanks for all of the replies so far and if anyone has any additional information please reply.

Like Tallpine said, it depends on the dealer and how they interpret the law. It's not the dealers fault. It's the way the ridiculous laws are written. I've had one dealer require the state police check on an AR-15 and another dealer run the same rifle through NICS. According to the law, any AK or 'similiar weapon' is considered regulated and requires a MDSP check. It's the 'similiar weapon' part that some of the dealers key in on probably.
