Hey all...I noticed on RAA Saiga's website that there is a Saiga .308 model and a Saiga 7.62 model. I understand that the .308 model is chambered in 7.62, but fires .308 winchester cartridge, whereas the 7.62 model is also chambered in 7.62, but fires the 7.62 x 39 cartridge. Does that simply mean that the barrel caliber is the same, but the chamber houses different length cartridges?

Also, the 7.62 saiga states that it holds 5 or 10 rounds, whereas the .308 holds 8. I called a local dealer and they said they have the black saiga chambered in 7.62 x 39, but it holds only 8 rounds...what's that about?

Can we use standard AK mags in this? If so, then do most users simply get a 10 round AK mag, 10/20, 10/30 etc? Thanks!

I'm in CA by the way....

7.62 x 51 (.308) and 7.62x39 (ak) are completely different calibers. If your wondering if you could shoot the shorter x39 in a x51 no no no. Both rifles are based on the AK and use detachable magazines. Larger capacity magazines can be purchased for the 308 but they are expensive. I have the x39 and it came with a 10 round magazine. You can use standard AK magazines but it requires slight modification to the rifle and compliance with the 922 rules to be legal. goto forum-saiga12.com for any question at all on saigas.

IIRC, you can use the 10/30 mags once you do all the .gov footwork.. California rules are way over my head ATM.

A 10/30 mag is a 30 round magazine limited to 10 rounds, so it LOOKS like the real deal but only holds 10... I have read posts about them, but have not seen one.

So the saigas chambered in 7.62 x39 come with a TEN round magazine and not 8, correct? Is it safe to assume that the dealer was misinformed about the saiga holding only 8 rounds?
