Folks,

New to list, great place to be.

I had a couple of questions regarding a "new" used, older wood stock Savage 111 (sans the accutrigger) in .223 that I just bought...

1. I'm looking for a one piece base, can I mount a model 110 design on my 111?

2. Also, what is the difference between the 110 and 111, taking into consideration the vintage (no accutrigger)? I can't seem to find this answer anywhere.

I bought this gun as a way to get into some varmint hunting without spending a whole lot of money. I plan on scoping it up, have some ideas on the type of scope, but again, the more I read the more I turn in circles:banghead: Any thoughts on an ideal scope set up for this situation would be welcome as well. Shots in most cases probably won't exceed 250 yards.

Thanks in advnce,

Steve

Your's sounds to be the same thing that I have in my safe. They are compatible and the only difference that I'm aware of is the style of stock. My 111 has the straight stock where the 110 had the fake monte carlo stock. I had some time ago one in .223 and had a 4x-12x mounted on it. Worked great out to about 300 yards.

Ok, here's the deal, for a savage there are three possible action lengths, long, short, and the kinda rare J-series (intermediate).

excluding the J-series as "the family freak" three digit model numbers (110,111,112,114,116 etc) are Long actions and two digit models (10, 11, 12, etc) are short actions.

1. I'm looking for a one piece base, can I mount a model 110 design on my 111?
simple answer.... yes

for Pre-Accutrigger guns (noted on most new base packages i've come across as "old savage") all bases for "Savage model 10(sometimes noted with teh other numbers as well)" fit ALL short actions. bases listed as being to model 110 will fit all long actions. same holds true for the new guns as well, but since the newer guns have a rounded rear receiver instead of flat like the older guns, the bases for new and old do not interchange. one more note, all the new Stevens branded rifles use the newer style bases even though they do not feature the accutrigger

2. Also, what is the difference between the 110 and 111, taking into consideration the vintage (no accutrigger)? I can't seem to find this answer anywhere.

nothing mechanical, just variations in stock or barrel type, or intended function. the 114 series tended to be the fancier stock and finish blue than the rest, for a long time now 110 has been for their "Law enforcement" or Tactical line as well as a few package guns, 112 is usually a varmint gun, 111 is the catch all model that is considered their "hunter" guns basicly a 111 could come out just about anyway they wanted depending on the year, but tends to be in te more popular hunting configs.

for more info on savage go here there is also a forum over there that has more info as well

hope that helps

Once in a while I'll pick up a pre-accuratrigger Savage, usually for a song. The stock trigger can be improved but I replace them with SSS units on varmit rigs and thr Timney on hunting rifles. All is well in the world once this is done. Enjoy! Essex County

Thanks for the great info, appreciate it.

So I have a .223 in a 111, and it's considered a long action?

if it really does say 111 on the side it's a long action, for most of savage production there was not a short action, all rifles, all configs, in all calibers were put together on a single, long action, receiver design. short action rounds like .308 and .223 had spacers in, or less receiver floor cut away for, the mag well. the short actions as we see them now did not appear well into the late 90's.

I had a .223 110FP (the heavy barrel "tactical" model) made the last year of long actions only, literally I bought the rifle with money from a xmas second job right after the new year and the short action was unveiled at SHOT a few months later. i now have a .223 12FV (target/varmint config) but i still sometimes miss my old long action.
