I have a Savage 12, .223 in need of some appropriate glass, which I hopefully just solved yesterday, when I found a deal on a NIB Nikon Monarch 6-24x50 that I could not pass up ($450).

I'm pretty new to the somewhat serious scope game. What would those that know recommend for some good bases and rings, without going crazy on price. I'd like to stay less than $100 for mounts and bases if possible, also I like the 2 piece bases to keep the action access open as can be. What others (beyond Warne and Badgers)?

I like the Leupold Standard rings and bases, with the one dovetail in the front to get some more windage adjustment with the rear base. Will these do the job? For about $50 you are set with bases and rings. Seems to be the cheaper side of what I have looked at.

Am I going to run into trouble with that setup? Also, I assume I will need the High rings with a 50mm objective. Will shorter rings work also? I haven't been able to match rings with scope with rifle in person yet. Nor find any info online as to what rings fit what.

Your recommendations and answers are as always appreciated!

I've got Warne on my Model 12. Haven't had a problem with them.

www.swfa.com is a good source. Check out their message board for ring height suggestions as well.

I've got a Nikon Monarch 5-20x. Good glass, but the range of adjustment is limited. If you're going to be shooting past 600 yards check into a 20moa base.

I would put a Game Reaper on that rifle. It will not break the bank and its one of the best mounts on the market. I have these mounts on some rifles and have have put several on other rifles. I have not heard anything bad about these mounts yet.

You can call or e-mail DNZ Products and they can tell you what height mount you need for the scope/rifle combo you have. They have top notch customer service.

I see. I'll be maxing out at around 350-400 yards I hope. .223 will only go so far, add to that my shooting skills and thats as far as I realistically expect to go. Longer = 30 caliber rifle.

How about lapping the rings? Recommend any trusted gunsmith in the Twin Cities, Minnesota area to do that? Or do I go the Burris Signature route and trust the inserts?
