I kinda agree with TP308 on this one. Seems gimmicky on the part of Savage, which they don't need gimmicks. It's like Mossberg selling a lever action "tactical" 30-30 with zombie stickers and junk on it, like rails and M4 stock. Same for this hog gun, they're marketing it as a hog hunting rifle while just about every rifle Savage makes already IS a hog worthy rifle. It's the old adage about putting a high sheen on a turd.I have one with a fairly low mounted scope. The Irons are still there. No bother at all.
TP.308:
Nothing wrong with "different" rifles. Do you want them to stop making new cars cause there are enough cars to do whet we need them to do? Do you want the Pro Gun tthoughts and new markering to dry up cause its all been done already and what you have will do it just fine. New guns and New gun owners are a GOOD thing. Saves our sport from extenction.
That would imply that Savage is trying to sell sub-standard guns (i.e. "turds") by use of flashy cosmetics or disengenouous marketing (the "high sheen"). I would hardly consider Savage products to be "sub-standard". Sure, the marketing is a bit of a gimick, to try cashing in on the growing popularity of hog hunting, but they are producing what appears to be a good quality gun with a set of specs/features that at least some people think make it particuarly well suited for hog hunting. It's the old adage about putting a high sheen on a turd.
Nah, it's a gimmick. Savage has the ability to rest on laurels of fine craftsmanship, the marketing is not necessary. Purely capitalism, not adding a platform that hasn't been seen. I imagine that, if broken down, it shares most if not all features in some variance or combination with other rifles in their lines. I've fondled one at the LGS: Impractical as its not in any way compact "feeling", bit heavy to be totable or on the move, like the sights (fan of tangent) but the stock feels plastic, and a bargain rifle with a threaded barrel is like a Gremlin with a supercharger in it; unnecessary at best. Plan on using subsonics to make a suppressor viable? Guess you could, but I'd just buy the cheap Walmart stuff to make it all hog-friendly. There's many a Savage that is light weight, optic friendly, and easily qualifies as a hog rifle. End of rant, promise. That would imply that Savage is trying to sell sub-standard guns (i.e. "turds") by use of flashy cosmetics or disengenouous marketing (the "high sheen"). No reason to critisize Savage for trying to make money with an honest product.
no one has mentioned the fact that it has a threaded muzzle. In Texas we can use suppressors to hunt game animals.
I think the hog hunter is kind of cool, a little off balance for me (front heavy) but a cool idea for sure. A 338fed shooting 250-300gr sub sonic loads would be better for a suppressed hog dropper but I suppose the 308 will do the trick with a 1:10" twist (240gr weldcore anyone )
Only partially true, the law doesnt take effect until Sept 1st 2012

we have been able to hunt hogs with suppressors for a long time. The new law allows hunting of deer with suppressors starting this years gun season.
