I have an opportunity to get a Savage 720 12ga for $225. Sorry I do not have any pictures. The barrel appears to have been re-blued, the receiver retains about 20% of its original finish. I did not see any rust or pitting. The wood stock and forend do not have any cracks. Mechanical it's in order and the bore is clean. I have looked to see is a barrel is available but could not find any or many replacement parts. I know little about this firearm. I know it is a copy of a browning auto5. Your thoughts would be a help.

If you have $225 and want it, buy it. Good gun. Pretty cheap to get into a good shotgun, any reblueing or finish loss notwithstanding. Plan on replacing springs and friction ring if you want to shoot it....if original, they're old!

I have a Savage 720 & 755 both in 12 Ga. both in great condition. As far as monetary value, you might not be able to sell it for 200.00, but I would imagine the sentimental value is priceless. I would encourage you to keep that gun and keep it in good shape. As far as wishing it was an A5, I guess I can understand that, but the 720s are not as common as the A5, and shoot just as well. Mine does a great job on the Trap line, and in the field.

Good advice. And don’t forget the Action Spring accessed by removing the stock. That’s the bolt return spring and your gun will be a lot livelier with a new one. Don’t forget to clean the Action Spring Tube while you’re at it. A lot of crud ends up in there, gumming up the works.

I know that Browning springs work on the Remington Model 11, I’m sure they’ll work on a Savage too.

Buy it! It is a great shotgun. It is essentially a remington Model 11, with a couple of important design differences related to the lack of a fiber buffer pad in the receiver, and differences in remington’s various trigger plate and safety changes over the years. Frankly, I think the 720’s solution to bolt/FP and receiver collision is better than the Model 11’s.

browning springs work just fine. And spares are usually found by searching for model 11 parts.

it is a great, soft-shooting gun when properly sprung and set up correctly. With some care, you will not be disappointed.
