Savage axis 30-06 question

My wife just got one in 223, and my nephew in 243. Both shot excellent. The Boyds stock come with 10/22 bottom metal to get around the plastic one.these guys offer a stock as well http://www.sharpshootersupply.com/ . Now if Boyds will start offering a lefty stock.......
Those stocks look really nice, but I just couldn't buy a $225 stock for almost anything, let alone a $300 rifle. I'd rather just buy another one. I don't have a .270, 30.06 or 7mm08 yet.

I don't like Glocks either.

Yeah, the Boyd's stocks for $99 are a much better deal. And my "gut feeling" is they all come from the same Chinese company. They certainly "look" extremely similar and... you know how American companies do business these days.....

$299 is pretty much the going retail price for one without the inexpensive scope. The "package deal" goes for around $350. I personally did not like the sloppiness of the action. The trigger was average. The stock is a bit on the light off-balanced side. Overall it is an average starter rifle. The biggest plus is that it's a Savage barrel.

When I was looking for a starter 30-06, I'd looked into the Mossberg ATR, Savage Axis, & Remington 770. All felt cheap. I ended up buying a slightly used Savage 110.

I got one in Jan '13 with some Christmas money/gift cards. (.243win).
I had to tweak the trigger as it was stiff (~8lbs). It's now ~2.5lbs and crisp. Wasn't a job for a beginner, but basically the same as the old Savage trigger.

After ~200rds, The barrel started settling down and it's basically a 1moa shooter. With Hornady 65gr V-max over 42.5gr of IMR4064 its 1/2moa. (2.625"oal, Hornady brass Fed210 primer).
I finally got a deer with it. 100gr PriviPartisan 41.5gr IMR4350. Typical performance. One shot, high heart hit, ran ~40yds.

Only thing I don't care for is the grip area of the stock. Too small/slim and long. Not easily fixed.
I do like how light it is. Length of pull is "ok" as is. (I'm average ht.)
Its a "decent" rifle, but I prefer the Marlin X7 series (S,L) better. Same accuracy, better stock and trigger. About the same price.

Savage is coming out with the Axis II which now includes the accutrigger. But I really like my Timney I have on my Axis .308 but I don't mind my accutrigger either on my Model 10 FCP-K .308 either.
