Hello!

I am about to become the proud owner of a brand spanking new Savage 10 FCP (.308, 24" barrel, H-S Precision stock, detachable box magazine).

I plan to top it with a Burris Black Diamond 6-24X with the mil-dot reticle.

I am currently at a crossroads with respect to a base and rings. As it stands now, I am leaning toward a Ken Farrell base and rings, but I am eager to hear suggestions from those more knowledgeable.

I thank you in advance for your advice and wisdom.

Thanks again,

Adam

I use that set up with a 15moa base. They are pretty high and the CS is second to none. I have a 6-24x50 and have a 1/4" clearance still.

I have a Leupold Base and ring's on a hunting rifle with no telling the hours in the field and in over 25 years they have never moved.

Forgive my ignorance. . .

. . .but what does CS mean?

Would you recommend the 20 MOA Farrel base? Also, which Farrell rings would you suggest?

Thanks again,

Adam

I was looking at Warne rings/bases as well.

So, here's the next question - what does the Warne set up have to recommend it over the Farrell and vice versa?

Thanks!

Adam

Customer Service.
What size objective is the scope you are looking for. If your scope can handle the 20 go for it mine couldn't I had to swap it for the 15. I started with a 20moa and one scope, I swapped scopes and could no longer zero at 100yds with the 20 so I swapped it for a 15.

Ok, this is where Adam shows his ignorance.. .

What do I get out of a 15 or 20 MOA base? I had assumed that it gave me another 20 MOA of adjustment for zeroing purposes (although I wasn't sure how this was accomplished). Feel free to explain as technically as possible. I'm a dolt, but I learn fast!

The scope is going to be a 6 - 24 x50mm Burris Black Diamond with a 30mm tube, if that helps.

What size rings Farrell are you using with the Farrell base?

Thanks again,

Adam

There is a bunch of options out there. First figure out what your needs are meaning people will say well if your not fast roping out of a little bird with the potential to drop your rifle you will be fine with the ones from Wal-Mart. I will not be fast roping ever but I do hunt in a stand I fall a sleep up there and might just drop my rifle so I want high quality just like thoughs that have the government buying their stuff.

Second figure out how much you are willing to spend seeing how you are looking at ken's it appears that money isn't a real deciding figure here.

I wish someone would together a test for all the different rings and see at what pressure they fail so we know and don't have to guess which are the best.

Like I said before Ken's stuff is high that is my only gripe with them.

I am using standard height 30"mm rings.

Yes, the choice really comes down to something like Ken's stuff or Warne (same $$ range) and the Burris tactical rings.

I've budgeted for this set up for about a year - it's my annual use of the "I love me gun fund," and I'd rather go with the rings/base I won't regret (for any reason, real or imagined) later.

Next couple of questions (and I really do appreciate all your help!!!!)

1) The site you sent me to was extremely helpful! Since my planned use for this rifle is 30 - 600m, it seems that I don't need a 20MOA base, and that a 10MOA base would be plenty. Is that correct? Alternatively, will the 20MOA base hurt me?

2) I've seen references to the proper amount of torque for setting the base screw on a Picatinny attachment as either 25 inch-pounds or 65 inch-pounds (and this is referred to as mil-spec). Is this critical, and should I invest in an inch-pound calibrated torque wrench?

Thanks again,

Adam

I would assume with that Burris you will have plenty enough internal adjustment to get away with the 20moa. Ken charged me $6, and that was to cover shipping only, to swap the base for me so I would say go for it. I oersonally don't think you will find better quality of rings and bases.

Not sure where you were looking at buying them. I like a dumbass bought them straight from the factory had bought them from here I would have saved $45 http://www.sharpshootersupply.com/

I don't use a torque wrench I just wrench em down hard. Not sure of the damage of over tightening them I mean I'm not going to snap the heads off or nothing.

I'm pretty positive that Ken's stuff is not Mil Spec or Picatinny; but instead Weaver style whatever that means.

My attitude towards which moa to get is get what you can get away with. They are the same price so its like free moa for going out to further ranges.
I would ask around and see what other who have your scope are using.

I think I'm slowly coming around! Sounds like a call to Ken on Monday is in order!

Do you have an idea what his turnaround time on in-stock items is? I.e, if he gets the order on Monday morning, will the order go out that day?

I'm eager as this coming Friday starts this school year's "Friday Range Day." That is, every Friday, I pick my boy up from school, and we head out to the range to bust caps for a couple of hours before going out for Korean BBQ. He's just about grown into the point where he can deal with a standard length of pull, and we've been excited about this purchase since it was planned last year. .. ..

Thanks again,

Adam

I dont quite remember their turnaround time on orders. I would imagine if you order early in the day they will get out that day. I think they are in a small town so I beleive their daily pickup was at wierd time. Best of luck to you.

I have a FArrell 20 MOA base on my Savage, and with the limited range of adjustment on my Bushnell 4200, I'm zeroed at 300 yards. So if you're not going past 600, and have a 30mm tube, I'd think a 10 MOA would be more than enough. The 30mm tube may have enough. I can't decide whether or not to change mine to a 10 MOA, or just get some offset inserts for my Signature zee rings.
