Savage Model 67 series E Slide question

Can anyone tell me if this part of the Savage 67 12ga slide is supposed to be welded on ? Looks like it was spot welded but on one I'm working on, it's completely separate. Pic is from Numrich's site.

It was more or less staked in place. I have repaired them with silver braze for years.

The slide assembly is different from the Savage 167 I just worked on. Those milled cutouts must be for the lifter assembly.
