This weekend I visited my local gun shop and talked myself into a shiny new .308 rifle.

So, the owner (who i've done much business with before) tells me to get a Savage w/ accutrigger and a heavy barrel. They're cheap, reliable and somewhat customizable....and they are accurate out of the box.

I've been doing some research and I"m not finding the exact model he told me about and showed me (they had the same thing in 25-06 caliber, I want 308). I'm seeing Savage 10 and 110 models as the most common, but the pictures I'm finding aren't showing as big of a barrel as this one had.

He's charging $475 for it, if that helps identify it. I"m mostly concerned if it's a 10 or a 110 so I can go ahead and get a new stock for it.

ya, that looks like it.
I'd imagine that there is no way to get a stock that's going to fit it.

Go to Savageshooters forum and they can help you out with finding another stock for that rifle. There is a llot of knowledge on Savage firearms on this site.

I'll be spying Dick's this fall for sales on Saveage & Stevens, but they NEVER have .308 on the shelf here. Not Savage or Remington or Tika....

Clerk seems fairly knowledgeable and he tells me the corporate masters think .308 is a military caliber with no legit. sporting application :uhoh:

He can order one....but you have to pay MSRP....no sale prices or discounts.

There's a gun store in PA that always posts a several Savage and Stevens rifles at prices as low as Dick's best sale price. You've got to pay shipping and FFL, but he always list .308.

the black , synth stokcs that come on the 12 , are better than the ones on the 10's or 11's. you may wanna wait on getting it , before automatically changing out the stock.

I have this one: Savage 10FP.

It is the same as the 12FV, but mine has a 20" barrel instead of the 24" on the 12FV.

The plastic stock that comes standard is fine, but to really get the most performance from the rifle, I will upgrade to a better stock and bedding some time in the future. As others have said, go look at savageshooters.com for lots of info.

Here's what my stock rifle can do with factory match ammo: savage group.

very nice. I think I'm going to do more research before buying one of these rifles.

As a lefty, I've gotta say that bolt action rifles are usually a PITA.

Savage 10FP in 20in is what I have been looking at, just need to find a good scope for my small budget.
How do you like the 10FP?

Are you going to hunt with it? or shoot from a bench?

I had a heavy barrel savage for a while in 223... it was the 12BVSS... the gun was simply to heavy to be fun to hunt with.

It was great off the bench though.

ya, this one's a bit heavier than you'd first expect. Still, I think with an appropriate sling and a bipod it would be OK for hunting....but just OK.

I've mulled this over quite a bit, and I'm going to wait for a while due to financial issues. The $500 price tag for the rifle doesn't bug me, but $200 for scope, $100 for rings/base/sling another $200 for reloading supplies (I load pistol loads only now, need dies, trimmer, tumbler, yet more powder and primers blah blah blah) I'm looking at over $1,000 for this gun...and that's a lot of $$$ for the middle of summer when there's so much other stuff to spend on. ;) Darned mortgage always has to come before toys.

Kelly, I thought the 12BVSS would be "ok" for hunting but changed my mind. I don't know how you hunt but with improvised rests in the field, a heavy barrel is a definite minus. I don't hunt in conditions that would be compatible with using a bipod.

Also the practical difference in accuracy in the field with a heavy vs. lighter barrel is not much.

I can say when I was at the Dicks in Denver they did not sell .308 either but were more than willing to order it in through their catelog. That nasty old .308 round... its definitely not a deer rifle or anything... :D

I hunt with my .308 12fv, all 15lbs of it. I got a tac-driver from richards microfit stocks, which makes the gun really comfortable to shoot, in all positions, I have no problems shooting offhand with it. Warne bases and rings. Harris bipod. And a super sniper 10x is on the way... a good bedding job. The whole thing is just over 1k, but is a comfortable, great looking gun. And it shoots, better than me...

I am happy with my savage, savageshooters.com is a good place for info.

Ive got the 12FV .308 and hunt with it I dont travel long distances though. I shoot lefty just bought the righty though. I will buy a an AR in a lefty since I plan on shooting that with both eyes open. anyway I bought my rifle new off of gunbrokers.com here is my breakdown.

Rifle 420
FFL 20
Glass 527
Mounts 215
Bi-pod 97
Total 1279

It has been purchasing little by little over the course of a year. I plan on starting to reload soon once I have a few hundred peices of brass to start with. And one day I will upgrade the stock.

Just my humble opinion, but from what I've seen I think this is a great time to buy to savage. They're making a great rifle for the price point, and I have a feeling prices on them will start to rise as they continue to increase in popularity.

Also, they do indeed make the 10FP in a left handed model with a heavy barrel. It's called the 10FLP.

Here it is

Speaking of accutriggers, I just did the spring cut down mod on the accutrigger on my Mark-II. Got it from the normally minimum trigger adjustment of 2.5 lbs down to about 1 lb. Now it's just super sweet. Nice thing too is that you can still adjust it back up again a little if you want to.

That nasty old .308 round... its definitely not a deer rifle or anything...

hehehe Yeah, it's almost as nasty as that extra-nasty old .30-06 round that helped our guys beat the Germans two wars in a row. Everybody knows that's sure enough not a deer rifle. I really like my '03A3 and M1 Garand.:cool::cool:

On the Savage Model 11, I got the GL in .243Winchester and it's quite accurate. It's also available in .308Winchester, but no, there aren't any heavy barrels. This is a hunting rifle. The model 10 is a heavy barrel bench gun... there's no way I'd lug it around hunting and I don't advise it.

3-digit model numbers (110) usually designate a long action (25-06, 7 rem mag, 30-06, etc). 2-digit model numbers (10) designate a short action (308, 243, etc).

older savages only came in the 110-series, so short action cartridges (308) can be found in the model 110.

Well there ya go. Thanks for pointing that out Hexidismal, for some reason I'd never even noticed that Law Enforcement section. Even more options. :)

it would be OK for hunting....but just OK

Savage makes a fine rifle & the accutrigger is nice, however they are HEAVY. I had a 12FV in .204 Ruger when they first came out, but I definitely knew when I had packed it all day. After I picked-up a .204 barrel for my Condender carbine, the Savage only saw range use, until I decided I didn't want 2 rifles in that caliber. If hunting is your game, you may want to consider a lighter barrel.

The according to Savage's website, my rifle is "111FXP3", yet on the barrel is says "Savage Model 110".

Whats up with that? Is there a difference between 110 and 111?
